HSR Equilibrium Level Explained: How to Raise It and What Changes

Equilibrium Level is Honkai: Star Rail's world-difficulty tier. It raises the average level of enemies across the whole game and, in exchange, raises the rarity of what they drop. You lift it by clearing a Trial of the Equilibrium at Trailblaze Level 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 65. If that part matters to you, HSR Warp Pity Explained goes deeper.

Almost every other progression system in the game sits downstream of it. Your character ascension ceiling, your Trace unlocks, the tier of relics and ascension materials your Trailblaze Power regen caps and best uses buys, even the number of Technique Points you can bank before a fight all move when Equilibrium Level moves, so it is worth reading this alongside the guide to character ascension, Traces and their materials before you plan a farming week. It is also the one progression gate the game refuses to let you skip: once you hit a Trailblaze Level cap, no amount of Trailblaze EXP will push you past it until the corresponding Trial is cleared. This guide covers what Equilibrium Level does, how each tier changes your account, how to get through the Trials, and why raising it too early is the most common self-inflicted difficulty spike in the game.

What is Equilibrium Level in Honkai: Star Rail?

Equilibrium Level is a world-difficulty setting that scales the entire game at once. Raising it increases the average level of enemies you meet everywhere, and simultaneously raises the rarity tier of the rewards those enemies and their associated domains hand out. It is permanent and one-directional.

The system is introduced during the Trailblaze Mission "To Rot or to Burn", and the first Trial becomes available once you have finished "Not Good With Farewells" and reached Trailblaze Level 20. From that point onward, Equilibrium Level and Trailblaze Level advance in lockstep: Trailblaze Level is the odometer that measures how much you have played, and Equilibrium Level is the gearbox that decides how hard the road is.

The distinction between the two trips up a lot of newer players, and it matters because they are earned in completely different ways. Trailblaze Level accrues passively from playing. Equilibrium Level only ever moves when you deliberately walk into a Trial and win it. Two accounts can sit at the same Trailblaze Level with different Equilibrium Levels, and the one with the lower Equilibrium Level is farming worse rewards for the same Trailblaze Power. If the wider progression picture is still fuzzy, our HSR progression explainer covering levels, warps and characters maps how the layers stack, and this guide assumes that context from here.

How do you raise your Equilibrium Level?

You reach a Trailblaze Level cap, then clear the Trial of the Equilibrium the game hands you at that cap. The gates sit at Trailblaze Level 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 65, producing Equilibrium Levels 1 through 6. Until the Trial is cleared, further Trailblaze EXP is wasted, because the level cap will not move.

Getting to each gate is the easy half. Trailblaze EXP arrives from Trailblaze Missions and Travel Log events, from Daily Training, from spending Trailblaze Power on any domain, from exploration and treasure hunting, and from Simulated Universe runs. Daily Training is the most reliable of these because it refreshes every server reset and pays out at every 100 Activity Points up to a daily ceiling of 500. Skipped days do not bank; that reward is simply gone.

Trailblaze Power is the other steady contributor and it rewards attention rather than skill. It regenerates one point every six minutes up to a cap of 300, and overflow rolls into Reserved Trailblaze Power, which fills far more slowly at one point every 18 minutes and holds up to 2,400. Between the live pool and the reserve, an account that gets checked once a day loses very little, while an account left alone for several days starts leaking. Power can also be converted into Immersifiers for Simulated Universe rewards at a rate of 40 Trailblaze Power per Immersifier, and that conversion only runs one way.

The Trials themselves are the hard half, and they are deliberately built to test whether your roster has actually kept pace with your Trailblaze Level. Each Trial locks out auto-battle. Technique Points cannot be refreshed once spent, and between the fights inside a Trial you cannot restore HP or Technique Points from items or destructible objects. There is no timer, so a survivable team beats a fast one every single time.

What actually changes when your Equilibrium Level goes up?

Four things move at once: the ascension ceiling for characters and Light Cones, the Trace nodes you can unlock and upgrade, the rarity tier of materials dropped by domains and enemies, and specific feature unlocks tied to individual tiers. Each Trial also pays a one-off completion reward.

The tier-by-tier shape is worth knowing before you plan a push:

Equilibrium Level 1 lifts the Trailblaze Level cap from 20 to 30, raises maximum Technique Points from 3 to 4, allows Ascension Level 2, and unlocks Calyx (Crimson) — the domain family that supplies Trace materials. The completion payout includes 3 Star Rail Passes, 5 Traveler's Guides, 4 Refined Aether, 5 Cosmic Fried Rice and 30,000 Credits.

Equilibrium Level 2 raises the cap to 40, pushes Technique Points from 4 to 5, which is the permanent maximum, allows Ascension Level 3, and unlocks Stagnant Shadow, the source of character ascension materials. It pays 3 Star Rail Passes, 8 Traveler's Guides, 6 Refined Aether, 3 Wrathful Gauntlets and 40,000 Credits.

Equilibrium Level 3 allows Ascension Level 4 and unlocks Relic crafting, which is the point where relic farming stops being purely a matter of luck and starts being a system you can steer.

Equilibrium Level 4 allows Ascension Level 5.

Equilibrium Level 5 allows Ascension Level 6, the maximum. From here the ascension ladder is fully open and further Equilibrium Levels stop adding new caps.

Equilibrium Level 6, reached at Trailblaze Level 65, is the last Trial in the chain as the system currently stands. Because the ascension ceiling is already unlocked by that point, its value is concentrated in world level and reward tier rather than in a new cap.

Read that list from the top and a pattern shows up. The first two tiers unlock the farms, the third unlocks the crafting, and the remaining tiers unlock the levels. That ordering is why an account stuck at a low Equilibrium Level is not merely weaker, it is missing entire supply chains. You cannot upgrade Traces properly without Calyx (Crimson) access, and you cannot ascend past early caps without Stagnant Shadow materials.

Why does the game feel harder right after an Equilibrium Trial?

Because the world scales instantly and your characters do not. The moment a Trial is cleared, average enemy level across the game jumps, while your team is still sitting at whatever levels, Traces and relics it had five minutes earlier. The new ceiling you just unlocked takes days of materials to actually reach.

This is the single most common complaint from players who have just cleared a Trial, and it is not a bug or a difficulty spike in the design sense. It is the intended trade. You are being paid in future reward rarity for accepting present-tense difficulty, and the gap between the two closes only as fast as you spend Trailblaze Power on ascension and Trace materials.

The practical consequence is that the worst time to raise Equilibrium Level is right before content you actually care about clearing. If a limited-time event with a combat stage is running, or you are mid-way through an endgame rotation, finishing the Trial first means fighting higher-level enemies with an unchanged team for the rest of that window. Clear the content, then take the Trial, then spend a few days catching your roster up.

Team composition absorbs a surprising amount of this. A properly balanced squad with a sustain unit and matched combat types handles a world-level jump far better than a raw-damage lineup that was winning on overkill, because overkill is exactly what disappears when enemy levels rise. Our guide to HSR characters and best teams by Path and Type covers how to build the balanced version if your current four are held together by a single damage dealer.

How do you prepare for a Trial of the Equilibrium?

Bring type coverage for both enemy groups, bring a sustain unit, and make sure your ascension and Trace levels are roughly one step ahead of your Trailblaze Level rather than one step behind. Each Trial is tuned to the maximum upgrades available at that cap, not to the minimum.

The Trials are structured as consecutive elite encounters with different combat type weaknesses, which is the whole point of them. Part One, for example, pits you against a Searing Prowler group weak to Ice and Imaginary, then an Ice Out of Space group weak to Fire and Quantum. A single-element team will break a Weakness on one group and grind uselessly against the other. Two damage dealers with different types plus one sustain unit is the shape that consistently works.

Three rules matter more than roster quality here. First, no auto-battle, so you have to actually pilot the fight and watch Weakness Break windows. Second, Technique Points do not refresh mid-Trial, so opening every fight with a Technique is a habit that will leave you empty at the worst moment. Third, no healing or Technique Point recovery between battles from items or the environment, which means whatever HP your sustain unit can generate during a fight is all the HP you get.

If a Trial genuinely will not fall, the fix is almost never a new character. It is ascension levels on the characters you already have, Trace levels on the damage dealer's Skill and Ultimate, and relics upgraded to the tier appropriate for your current cap. The recommended guidance the game itself gives before each Trial lists average team level, ascension level, Light Cone level, Trace levels and relic upgrade range for exactly this reason: the check is on account investment, not on account luck.

Should you ever delay raising your Equilibrium Level?

Yes, but only briefly and only for a specific reason. Delaying costs you reward rarity on every Trailblaze Power expenditure in the meantime, so a long delay is expensive. The legitimate reasons to wait are an active event you want to clear at current difficulty, or a roster that is genuinely under-invested for the next tier.

The argument for pushing immediately is stronger than most players assume. Every day spent at a lower Equilibrium Level is a day of farming lower-tier ascension materials, lower-tier Trace materials and lower-rarity relics with the same 300-plus Trailblaze Power you would have spent anyway. That is not a neutral delay; it is a permanent loss of resources you can never re-farm, because Trailblaze Power does not bank indefinitely.

The argument for waiting applies in exactly one shape: you are close to a cap, your characters are noticeably under-levelled, and there is time-limited combat content live right now. In that case, clear the time-limited content first, because that content will not return, while the Equilibrium reward upgrade will still be waiting tomorrow.

Deliberately parking at a low Equilibrium Level as a long-term strategy does not hold up. Low-Equilibrium worlds are easier, but every system that makes an account strong long-term — Trace nodes, relic crafting, ascension caps, material tiers — is gated behind the tiers you are refusing. The account gets easier and weaker at the same time.

How does Equilibrium Level relate to Trailblaze Level and account strength?

Trailblaze Level tells you how much an account has been played; Equilibrium Level tells you how much of the game's reward economy that account has actually unlocked. The two are correlated but not identical, and the second one is the better indicator of what an account can do today.

Trailblaze Level itself caps at 70. Past that point, Trailblaze EXP has nowhere to go and is converted into Credits at a ratio of 16 Credits per point of EXP, which is a quiet signal that the developers consider 70 the end of that particular ladder. Equilibrium Level, by contrast, tops out at 6 under the current system, reached at Trailblaze Level 65 — meaning an account can finish the Equilibrium chain a full five Trailblaze Levels before it finishes the Trailblaze ladder.

This is why Trailblaze Level is the number that shows up first in almost every account description you will read. It is a compact proxy for time invested, world difficulty tier, ascension ceiling and unlocked farming domains all at once. An account listed at Trailblaze Level 65 or above has, by definition, cleared every Trial in the chain and has the full ascension ladder and every domain family available. One listed in the 40s has not, regardless of what its character roster looks like.

The roster is still the other half of the equation, of course, and neither number tells you anything about which characters are on the account. If you are still getting oriented with how the game's core systems fit together, the HSR beginner's guide to warps, characters and Stellar Jade is the right entry point, and our explainer on HSR servers and cross-progression covers why an account's region matters as much as its level, since Trailblaze and Equilibrium progress lives on one server region and does not follow you across them.

Common questions about Equilibrium Level

Can you lower your Equilibrium Level once you have raised it? No. Equilibrium Level only moves upward, and there is no in-game option to step a world back down to an earlier tier. This is why the timing of a Trial is worth thinking about rather than clearing it the instant it appears.

Does Equilibrium Level affect Simulated Universe or endgame modes? Endgame modes run on their own difficulty scaling rather than on your world's Equilibrium Level, but Equilibrium Level still shapes your performance in them indirectly, because it governs the ascension caps, Trace nodes and material tiers your team is built from.

What happens if I ignore a Trial and keep playing? You keep playing normally, but Trailblaze Level stops. Every point of Trailblaze EXP you earn while sitting at a cap is wasted, along with the level-up rewards waiting behind it, so an ignored Trial quietly costs Stellar Jade and Star Rail Passes.

Do I need specific five-star characters to clear the Trials? No. Each Trial is tuned to the upgrades available at its cap, not to a premium roster. Correct combat type coverage against both enemy groups plus a sustain unit matters far more than rarity, and free characters with proper ascension and Trace investment clear every Trial in the chain.

Does raising Equilibrium Level increase Trailblaze Power costs? No. Domain costs stay the same. What changes is what you get back for that spend, which is the entire reason to raise it.
