HSR Currency Wars Guide: How the Mode Works and What It Rewards
By Sir Ayup
HSR Currency Wars is a permanent auto-battler mode in Honkai: Star Rail where you recruit characters with Gold Coins, place them on the board and let the fights play out automatically. Your own roster does not decide the result: every run starts from a random squad, characters you own keep their progress and the rest appear as trial versions. Strong runs come from managing coins, building Bonds and placing each character in the right slot.
This guide from gamemarket.gg explains how to unlock the mode, how a run works from the first shop to the last boss, how Standard and Overclock runs differ, what the mode rewards, and what changes with the new season arriving in Version 4.7.
How to Unlock Currency Wars
Currency Wars opens after you complete the Currency Wars Adventure Mission, a short tutorial run. Once it is done, the mode can be entered from the Interastral Peace Guide or from its marker in Dewlight Pavilion on Penacony.
The mode arrived in Version 3.7 and has stayed in the game since, with seasonal updates that change characters, Bonds and rewards rather than replacing the mode.
How an HSR Currency Wars Run Works
A run moves through a series of stages, each made of rounds where your squad fights automatically. Between fights, almost every decision comes down to coins.
- Gold Coins and the Store. Coins buy characters from a Store that refreshes after each battle. You can also pay to refresh it early or lock it to keep a good offer.
- Character costs. Characters are priced by rarity: grey 1, green 2, blue 3, purple 4 and gold 5 coins. Gold characters only appear once your level is high enough.
- Interest. Unspent coins earn interest at the end of each battle, roughly 1 coin for every 10 saved, up to a cap. Saving early often pays for a stronger squad later.
- Star-ups. Three copies of the same character merge into a 2-star version, and three 2-stars merge into a 3-star.
- Squad size. Your Experience Level limits how many characters can fight. Levels come from winning battles or buying experience with coins.
Positioning, Bonds and Equipment
Each character has an on-field role, an off-field role, or both. Placing a character outside their role switches off their unique abilities, so a strong unit in the wrong slot can do very little.
Bonds are shared keywords that unlock team effects once enough members are on the board, such as Xianzhou, Stellaron Hunters or Follow-up ATK. Most successful runs commit to one or two Bonds early instead of collecting a little of everything.
Equipment drops from reward and boss stages. Each character can hold up to three items, and two items can be fused into a stronger one. Before a run, you also choose an Investment Environment and a Strategy, which shape how the economy and your squad develop.
Squad HP, Bosses and Ratings
Your squad starts each run with 100 HP. Losing a stage costs HP, and the run ends when it reaches zero. Each stage also has a turn limit, and boss stages require a minimum amount of damage, so a squad that survives but cannot finish quickly still loses ground.
The run is graded from C to SSS based on how much HP remains at the end. Characters cannot be knocked out during a fight; at zero HP they partially recover, but the lost turns still count against you.
Standard and Overclock Runs
There are two ways to play:
- Standard runs raise your Gambit rank, which sets the difficulty. Winning at your highest available difficulty raises your rank by up to 3, depending on how much squad HP you finish with, and losing a run never lowers it.
- Overclock unlocks after your first Standard run. It has fewer combat nodes and faster resource gain, but no rank progress, which makes it a quick way to farm points.
Rewards and Resets
Currency Wars pays out through a points track that includes Stellar Jade, a Star Rail Pass, Tracks of Destiny, Fuel Vouchers and Deep Immersifiers, plus one-time Stellar Jade for activating every Bond for the first time. The points track resets every two weeks on Monday at 04:00 server time, so regular players can claim it many times per season.
A separate Ascension track awards Stellar Jade, Credits and character EXP materials and resets with each season. The mode also gives the Owlbert avatar as a cosmetic reward. Together with the other endgame modes, it is one of the steadiest repeatable sources of Stellar Jade in the game.
What Changes in the Version 4.7 Season
The current season, Zero-Sum Game, ends on November 11, 2026, and unclaimed rewards are reported to be lost once it closes. The next season, Voyage Into the Canvas, starts with Version 4.7 and brings the largest shake-up so far: 60 characters reworked and 29 new Bonds, with equipment and the seasonal layout reset while permanent progress stays.
The headline addition is Aeon Aha, who starts as a weak unit, grows with each copy and can eventually become a 7-cost Aeon with Elation characters or the right Bond. The full details are covered in the 7-cost Aha arriving in Currency Wars. HoYoverse has said some details may still change, so the season's first days are the best time to test which Bonds work.
A Mode Built on Decisions, Not Rosters
Currency Wars rewards planning more than spending: saving coins for interest, committing to Bonds and placing each character correctly matter more than which 5-stars you own. That said, knowing the strongest characters still helps when they appear in the Store, and the current HSR tier list is a useful reference. Newer players can also get familiar with Warps, characters and Stellar Jade before diving in.
If you would rather start with a strong roster already built, you can browse Honkai Star Rail Accounts, hand dailies and repeatable modes to a verified player through Honkai Star Rail Hourly Services, or clear endgame faster with Honkai Star Rail Boosting.
