Zenless Zone Zero ZZZ Armorer Specialty Explained: Maim, Multi-CRIT news image

Zenless Zone Zero Version 3.2 introduces Armorer, a new Agent Specialty built around combining defensive attributes with offensive mechanics. Its debut adds Maim, multi-CRIT and Counter Assist, while the first Armorer, Claret, demonstrates the system through DEF-based damage, Gash buildup and Laceration DMG.

The important distinction is that not everything in Claret's kit should be treated as a permanent rule for every future Armorer.

Maim, multi-CRIT and Counter Assist are part of the new Specialty framework. Gash and Claret's exact DEF/CRIT interactions are her implementation of that framework.

That distinction keeps the new class easier to understand.

What is the Armorer Specialty?

HoYoverse describes Armorer as being designed around a balance between offense and defense.

Claret makes the idea literal.

Instead of simply stacking a defensive stat to survive longer, all of her skills use DEF as the base damage multiplier.

That makes defensive investment part of her offensive scaling.

But Armorer goes further by introducing two new damage concepts:

  • Maim
  • multi-CRIT

and one defensive interaction:

  • Counter Assist

The result is not simply "Defense Agent that deals more damage."

It is a different set of rules for how stats and enemy interactions can work.

Gash is Claret's setup mechanic

Claret builds Gash on enemies by attacking them.

Once enough buildup has accumulated, Gash is applied to the target.

Specific skills can then interact with that state to trigger Maim.

This creates a two-step structure:

build Gash → trigger Maim

Gash itself should currently be understood as a Claret mechanic, not automatically something every future Armorer will use.

HoYoverse has presented Maim and multi-CRIT as Specialty-level additions, while Claret is the specific Agent using Gash to access Maim.

What does Maim do?

When Claret hits a properly prepared target with the required skill, Maim deals additional damage.

It also grants a Laceration DMG boost.

That makes Maim both:

  • immediate damage
  • setup for stronger subsequent Laceration output

The exact numerical value of that additional damage should be taken from the live September 9 build rather than old beta data.

For now, the important mechanic is the relationship:

Gash prepares the target. Maim converts that setup into additional damage and improves Laceration.

Multi-CRIT changes the 100% CRIT Rate rule

This is the most unusual Armorer mechanic revealed so far.

For most characters, CRIT Rate above 100% is effectively wasted because every eligible hit is already guaranteed to crit.

Claret can continue gaining value beyond that threshold.

When her CRIT Rate exceeds 100%, the excess portion is used by multi-CRIT.

The new calculation uses Laceration DMG in place of ordinary CRIT DMG.

That means the normal advice—

stop investing in CRIT Rate once you have enough to reach 100%

—does not automatically apply to Claret.

Why CRIT DMG still matters

At first glance, a mechanic that rewards CRIT Rate beyond 100% might suggest players should simply stack CRIT Rate and ignore CRIT DMG.

Claret's design prevents that from being so simple.

Part of her initial CRIT DMG is converted into initial CRIT Rate at a set ratio.

So both stats remain connected.

HoYoverse specifically identifies:

  • DEF
  • CRIT Rate
  • CRIT DMG

as key stats for building Claret.

That makes her stat sheet intentionally different from a conventional attacker.

GameMarket's ZZZ Drive Disc guide explains which Disc slots can roll DEF%, CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG, but players should wait for Claret's final live values before locking one universal Disc setup.

DEF is an offensive stat for Claret

Claret's skills use DEF as their base damage multiplier.

That means DEF serves two potential functions:

  • defensive durability
  • direct damage scaling

This is the clearest example of Armorer's offense-and-defense concept.

However, it is important not to turn that into a universal statement such as:

all Armorer Agents will always scale every skill from DEF.

Claret does.

Future Armorer kits may use the Specialty's broader mechanics differently.

Until another Armorer is officially revealed, Claret is the only implementation we can judge.

What is Counter Assist?

Armorer also has access to Counter Assist.

This allows an Armorer to contest certain enemy Control Skills and push the enemy back.

This gives the Specialty a defensive identity beyond raw stats.

Instead of only surviving an enemy action, Armorer can directly challenge specific actions.

The full list of attacks that count as compatible Control Skills should become much clearer through live combat and the new Armorer-specific VR Training stage arriving in Version 3.2.

Counter Assist is not the same as standard Assist behavior

Version 3.2 is separately adjusting Perfect Assist indicators:

  • golden flashes consistently indicate Defensive Assist
  • red flashes consistently indicate Evasive Assist

Counter Assist is an additional Armorer mechanic rather than simply another name for those standard Assist inputs.

That difference matters when learning the Specialty.

How the full Claret loop fits together

Based on the officially confirmed mechanics, the broad combat logic is:

  1. Claret attacks and builds Gash.
  2. The enemy reaches the required Gash state.
  3. A specific skill triggers Maim.
  4. Maim deals additional damage.
  5. Laceration DMG is boosted.
  6. Claret's DEF provides the base for her skill damage.
  7. Her CRIT setup allows excess CRIT Rate to feed multi-CRIT.
  8. Counter Assist gives her another way to contest enemy Control Skills.

That is enough to understand why her build looks unusual without relying on unconfirmed beta multipliers.

What Armorer means for team building

Armorer introduces a character who can occupy significant offensive responsibility without using the traditional ATK-first stat profile.

That creates potential value in teams where:

  • defensive stats are already being supported
  • Stun windows can help trigger Claret's payoff
  • the player wants a damage dealer with more resistance to pressure
  • Counter Assist is useful against specific enemies

But exact best teams should still wait for the final live kit.

Earlier GameMarket coverage in the Claret beta guide discussed leaked pairings and numerical mechanics. Those sections should now be treated as historical beta theorycrafting rather than final Version 3.2 recommendations.

Does Armorer replace Defense Agents?

No official announcement says that.

Armorer and Defense represent different design goals.

Defense Agents are primarily associated with team protection and defensive utility.

Armorer is explicitly built to balance offense and defense, with Claret serving as a high-damage example.

Counter Assist also gives the Specialty a defensive interaction, but that does not mean every Armorer will replace a dedicated shielder or protector.

Team slot value will depend on the individual kit.

Does every Armorer use Maim?

Maim is being introduced as part of the Armorer framework, but HoYoverse has only shown one playable Armorer so far.

Claret triggers it through her Gash setup.

It is therefore safer to say:

Armorer introduces Maim as a new mechanic. Claret accesses it through Gash.

Future characters may interact with it differently.

The same caution applies to DEF scaling and Laceration conversions.

What should you farm before Claret releases?

The confirmed mechanical priorities make it reasonable to preserve gear with useful combinations of:

  • DEF%
  • CRIT Rate
  • CRIT DMG

But Version 3.2 has not yet gone live.

Players should avoid discarding otherwise strong pieces simply because early beta guides proposed one exact main-stat setup.

The live kit, W-Engine and Drive Disc combinations will determine how much of each stat Claret actually needs.

Why Armorer matters beyond Claret

New character kits normally introduce a new rotation.

Armorer introduces new stat logic.

Multi-CRIT means CRIT Rate can have value beyond a threshold players normally treat as a hard cap.

DEF can directly fuel damage.

Counter Assist creates another way for player input to interact with enemy control.

Those ideas can affect future Agent design even if future Armorers do not copy Claret's exact Gash loop.

That is what makes Armorer worth understanding as a Specialty rather than only as part of one character guide.
