Wuthering Waves Weapon Guide: Rarity, Ascension and Stat Picks

A weapon in Wuthering Waves supplies your Resonator's base ATK, one bonus substat, and a passive effect, and those three parts together usually decide more of your damage than any single Echo does. Picking the right weapon type, substat, and ascension level matters far more than chasing five-star rarity. For the detail behind that, see Wuthering Waves Character Swap Timing.

That single sentence hides a lot of moving parts, because Wuthering Waves ties weapons to a fixed type per Resonator, gates their level behind six ascension phases, and hands out most of your real power through a substat line that never appears in the splash art. This guide walks through each layer in the order you actually meet it in-game: what a weapon contributes, which types exist, how rarity behaves, what ascension costs, which substat to prioritise, and how Syntonize ranks change the calculation. If you are still learning the fundamentals, the Wuthering Waves beginner's guide to Resonators, Echoes and Astrite covers the surrounding systems this one assumes.

⚔️ What does a weapon actually contribute to a Resonator?

A weapon contributes three things: a base ATK value that scales with its level and rarity, a single bonus substat such as Crit Rate or Energy Regen, and a passive skill that triggers on a specific condition. Base ATK feeds every damage formula in the game, so it is never wasted.

Base ATK is the part players underestimate. Resonator skill multipliers are applied to total ATK, and total ATK is the sum of your Resonator's own growth, your weapon's base ATK, and any ATK% from Echoes or the weapon substat. Because base ATK is a flat number rather than a percentage, it is multiplied by every ATK% bonus you own afterwards. A weapon that is twenty levels behind is quietly shrinking every buff stacked on top of it.

The substat is the second layer, and it is where builds are won. A weapon carrying Crit Rate frees your Echo main stats to chase Crit DMG or elemental bonus instead, which is why two weapons with identical base ATK can produce very different ceilings. The passive is the third layer and the most conditional: some passives demand you land a specific skill, stay above a health threshold, or maintain uptime on a buff. A passive you cannot reliably trigger is worth close to zero, so read the trigger condition before you read the number.

Because all three layers scale with investment, the practical rule is that an ascended four-star usually beats an unascended five-star. Levelling what you already own is the cheapest damage increase available to most accounts.

🗡️ What are the five weapon types and who can use them?

Wuthering Waves uses five weapon types: Sword, Broadblade, Pistols, Gauntlets, and Rectifier. Each Resonator is permanently locked to exactly one type, so a weapon is only ever useful to the subset of characters sharing that class. There is no cross-type equipping at any rarity.

This locking is the single most important planning fact in the whole system. Pulling a Rectifier when your entire built roster runs Broadblades does nothing for your account this patch, no matter how strong the weapon reads on paper. Before you spend anything on a weapon banner, count how many Resonators you actually use who share that type, and count how many you expect to use in the next few patches.

The types also correlate loosely with playstyle, which affects how much you value certain passives. Gauntlet and Broadblade users tend to sit inside enemy hit boxes and cycle heavy attacks, so passives keyed to sustained melee uptime are reliable for them. Rectifier users are more often support or off-field damage, where Energy Regen and buff duration matter more than raw crit. Pistols and Swords sit in between and cover the widest range of roles. Understanding which of your Resonators are on-field carries and which are quick-swap supports comes first, and the Wuthering Waves combat guide to parry, dodge and rotation basics explains how those roles behave in a real rotation.

⭐ How much does weapon rarity really change?

Rarity sets three ceilings at once: maximum base ATK, the size of the substat, and the strength of the passive. Five-star weapons lead in all three, but the gap between a five-star and a well-invested four-star is smaller in Wuthering Waves than in most gacha games, typically a modest damage difference rather than a tier jump.

Weapons run from one star to five stars. One and two-star weapons are effectively fodder for early progression and should be consumed or ignored once you have anything better. Three-star weapons carry you through the first Union Levels and then stop mattering. Four-star weapons are the real backbone of most accounts: they come from the standard Convene pool, from shop and event distributions, and from crafting, which means you can usually get several copies of the ones you want. Five-star weapons split into the standard-Convene line, which includes Lustrous Razor, Emerald of Genesis, Static Mist, Abyss Surges, and Cosmic Ripples, and the limited signature weapons released alongside specific Resonators.

Signature five-stars are built around one Resonator's exact kit, so their passives often reference the mechanic that Resonator uses. That makes them excellent on their intended holder and merely acceptable elsewhere. Standard five-stars are the opposite: broadly useful on anyone of that type, rarely the theoretical best on anyone. For a roster-building account rather than a single-carry account, standard five-stars and refined four-stars are the more efficient path, which is the same logic that governs Echo cost, main stats and tuning.

📈 How does weapon ascension work and what does it cost?

Weapon ascension raises the level cap in six phases, moving from 20 to 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and finally 90. Each phase consumes Shell Credits, a tier of weapon material from Forgery Challenges, and a common enemy drop, with costs rising sharply in the last two phases.

Levelling between ascensions uses energy core EXP items rather than materials, and those are plentiful compared to the ascension gates themselves. The genuine bottleneck is the Forgery Challenge line, since each weapon material family is tied to a specific Forgery domain running on a specific rotation and paid for with Waveplate. That means weapon ascension competes directly with Echo farming and Resonator ascension for the same daily stamina budget, and there is no way around that competition other than deciding what to prioritise.

A practical ordering that works for most accounts: push your main damage dealer's weapon to the cap that matches their current level, stop, and put the surplus into a second Resonator rather than overshooting. A weapon capped twenty levels above its holder's level does nothing, because ascension only raises a ceiling. Kuro Games' official patch notes periodically adjust material availability and add new Forgery rotations, so check the current rotation before planning a long farming week. Managing that Waveplate budget across weapons, Echoes and ascension is exactly what the Wuthering Waves echo farming guide to efficient grinding is built around.

One more cost worth naming: Shell Credits. Late ascension phases and weapon EXP both drain them, and most players hit a credit wall before a material wall. Overworld chests, the Simulation-style credit stages, and weekly content are the main sources, so if credits are your limiter, farming them directly is faster than farming anything else.

🎯 Which weapon substat should you actually prioritise?

Prioritise Crit Rate or Crit DMG on on-field damage dealers, Energy Regen on supports and quick-swap units that need their Resonance Liberation every rotation, and ATK% only when your Echo set already solves crit. The substat should fill the gap your Echoes leave, not duplicate what they already give.

The reason is that Crit Rate and Crit DMG want to stay in a rough two-to-one ratio, and Echo main stats offer both. If your Echoes already push Crit Rate near a usable threshold, a Crit DMG weapon converts that reliability into damage. If your Echoes are Crit DMG heavy and you are missing crits during a burst window, a Crit Rate weapon fixes the inconsistency that no amount of extra Crit DMG can repair. Inconsistent crits are worse than lower average damage, because Wuthering Waves damage arrives in short burst windows where a missed crit means a lost rotation.

Energy Regen is the substat players skip and then regret. A support whose Liberation is ready one rotation in two provides roughly half the buff uptime it was designed for. Before adding more ATK to a support, check whether their Liberation actually comes back on schedule during a real fight, not on a training dummy where you generate concentration freely. DEF% and HP% substats exist and are correct for the specific Resonators whose kits scale off those stats, which is a small group; treat them as niche rather than bad.

🔁 What is Syntonize and is stacking duplicates worth it?

Syntonize is Wuthering Waves' weapon refinement system. Feeding a duplicate copy of a weapon into itself raises its Syntonize rank by one, up to a maximum of five, and each rank strengthens the passive only. Base ATK and the substat do not change at all.

That distinction decides everything about whether duplicates are worth chasing. Because only the passive scales, the value of a Syntonize rank is directly proportional to how good and how reliably triggered that passive already is. On a four-star weapon with a strong, easily maintained passive, going from rank one to rank five is a genuine and cheap power spike, often competitive with a five-star at rank one. On a weapon whose passive is conditional or small, extra ranks are close to wasted.

For four-star weapons, duplicates arrive naturally from standard Convene and event distributions, so stacking them costs nothing you would otherwise spend. For five-star weapons, duplicates are extremely expensive and almost never a rational target for a player building a broad roster. The account-wide return on a second five-star weapon copy is far lower than the return on ascending a second Resonator to the same standard. If your goal is clearing harder endgame content rather than maximising one number, breadth wins, which is the same conclusion the Tower of Adversity guide to zones, vigor and rewards reaches from the roster side.

🧭 How do you choose a weapon without pulling on the banner?

Match the weapon type to a Resonator you already use, pick the substat that patches your build's weakest link, and then ascend it to your Resonator's current level cap. A crafted or shop four-star handled that way outperforms a neglected five-star in almost every practical fight.

Start by listing your actual team, not your aspirational one. For each slot, write down the Resonator's role, their weapon type, and the single stat their build is short on. That list usually produces an obvious answer, because most accounts have one carry starved of Crit Rate and one support starved of Energy Regen while a perfectly good four-star sits unlevelled in the inventory.

Then check what is obtainable without pulling. Wuthering Waves distributes four-star weapons generously through events, shop rotations, and crafting, and those weapons are designed to be viable rather than filler. Ascending one to phase five or six and pushing its Syntonize rank with duplicates you already own is nearly always the fastest damage increase available to a mid-progression account. Data Bank level gates some of the surrounding upgrades, so keeping it moving matters; the Data Bank guide to levelling it up faster covers that side of progression.

🚫 What are the most common weapon mistakes?

The three costliest mistakes are ascending a weapon past its holder's level, spreading materials thinly across many weapons instead of finishing one, and choosing weapons by rarity rather than by substat fit. All three waste Waveplate that cannot be recovered.

Ascending past the holder's cap is the most common, because the ascension button is always available and always feels like progress. It is not: the extra ceiling contributes nothing until the weapon level actually rises to meet it, and the materials are gone. Ascend one phase at a time, level into it, then repeat.

Spreading materials is subtler. Because Forgery Challenge materials come in families tied to specific weapon lines, half-ascending four weapons leaves you with four underperforming ones and no complete build. Finish the weapon on your main damage dealer first, then move down the team. Finally, resist judging weapons by star count alone. A five-star whose passive requires a mechanic your Resonator does not use is a worse pick than a four-star whose substat closes an actual gap. Read the passive trigger, check the substat, and only then look at the rarity border.
