NTE Zankou Guide: Reality, Illusion and the Best Scorch Teams

Zankou headlines Version 1.3 as an S-Class Incantation Esper with Gas Arc compatibility, arriving on the limited Alluring Shadows banner from 19 August and running until 9 September, when Linko's banner takes over. Her kit is built around a state switch most Appraisers will need a few runs to internalise: she fights in Reality, then transitions into Illusion, and almost everything that makes her strong happens on the other side of that transition. She's a main damage dealer who also buffs the team — raising CRIT DMG on damage-over-time effects and letting Scorch stack three times. Here's the full breakdown of both states, the teams that use her best, and what to sort out before the 19th.
Who she is
Zankou belongs to The Scarlet Letter, the faction working against you through the main story — Appraisers have already met her as a boss encounter. She's the daughter of Inanna, the younger sister of Daffodill and the older sister of Poinsette.
That family detail isn't just lore. Daffodill is one of her strongest teammates, so the story pairing and the team pairing point the same direction.
The Reality state
Zankou starts combat in Reality, and this half of her kit is the setup phase.
- Her normal attack, Wildfire, runs as a standard five-hit combo.
- She passively carries the Hunt buff while in Reality, which increases the damage she deals.
- After a Critical Dodge, pressing Basic Attack triggers a Dodge Counter, dealing one instance of Incantation damage.
The job here is straightforward: build toward the transition while taking free damage where it's offered. Don't treat Reality as the place you'll spend the fight.
Entering Illusion: Sanguine Dash
The state switch runs through Sanguine Dash, and there are three ways to trigger it:
- Use it after the 4th or 5th Basic Attack in your Wildfire combo
- Hold Basic Attack
- Trigger it from a Dodge Counter
Sanguine Dash does three things at once: it instantly switches Zankou from Reality into Illusion, applies Heartwrench to the target, and triggers Disarray, dealing heavy Break damage across a wide area.
That combination is why the transition matters. You aren't just changing stance — you're applying a debuff and landing your biggest area Break instance in the same input. Wasting Sanguine Dash on a single low-value target throws away the Break.
The Illusion state and Bloodfeast Reverie
Inside Illusion, her damage profile opens up.
Nightmare Waltz applies Heartwrench and spreads damage to nearby enemies, extending the debuff across a group rather than a single target.
The mechanical skill check sits in her Redirect Skill. Timing your skill usage correctly during Illusion triggers the Oblivion effect, which unlocks her upgraded Ultimate: Bloodfeast Reverie.
That's the ceiling of her kit, and it's gated behind execution rather than investment. A Zankou player who lands Oblivion consistently plays a meaningfully stronger character than one who doesn't — which makes her a rewarding pull for players who enjoy rotations and a frustrating one for players who don't.
What she actually does for a team
Her damage comes in three forms — direct damage, damage over time, and Break damage — which is unusually broad for a single Esper.
Her support contribution is the part that gets overlooked:
- She provides a CRIT DMG buff to DoT effects
- She allows Scorch to stack three times
That second point is the one to weigh. Raising a team-wide mechanic's stack ceiling is a structural buff, not a personal one, and it means her value doesn't disappear when she leaves the field.
The practical consequence: she can be built as a main DPS, as a sub-DPS, or as a Cycle Intensity and CRIT DMG engine for a pure Scorch team. Few Espers offer three genuinely viable roles.
Best teams
Scorch teams are her most natural home. The core structure pairs her with Daffodill and Baicang, who supply Chaos and Incantation damage to trigger Scorch while Zankou stays on the field applying her own damage and the CRIT DMG buff. Scorch favours extended field time and sustained damage over time, which suits a main-DPS Zankou.
Hexed teams are the alternative. Hexed rewards high-frequency, multi-hit attacks and short burst windows — a different rhythm that leans on her Reality combo and rapid state cycling rather than long field time.
Lacrimosa teams are also cited as a strong pairing, and Baicang works either as a Scorch enabler or as the standard Incantation main DPS alongside her.
If you're choosing between archetypes, ask how you actually play. Scorch wants patience and uptime; Hexed wants aggression and cycling.
Arc and Cartridge
Her signature Arc is Ravenous Blade, recommended as the best fit for her main-DPS playstyle — though its specific effects haven't been detailed yet, so hold judgement on whether it's worth a dedicated pull until the numbers appear.
For Cartridges, Crimson: Twin Butterflies is the standout: it increases Incantation damage and grants stacking ATK buffs whenever enemies take Incantation damage. Both halves of that effect are things Zankou's kit produces constantly, which is why it beats generic damage options on her.
A rotation to start with
- Open in Reality and run the Wildfire combo, taking Dodge Counters where the enemy offers them.
- On the 4th or 5th hit, trigger Sanguine Dash into a target group — you want the Disarray Break landing on more than one enemy.
- In Illusion, use Nightmare Waltz to spread Heartwrench.
- Time your Redirect Skill to trigger Oblivion.
- Release Bloodfeast Reverie.
That's the skeleton. Refining the Oblivion timing is where the real damage difference lives.
One quiet bonus: open-world invisibility
Outside combat, Zankou can turn invisible, with enemies unable to spot her. That's an exploration quality-of-life feature rather than a combat stat, but for anyone still working through Hethereau's harder overworld areas it's a genuine convenience.
Should you pull?
Yes, if you run Incantation teams. The bracket has been waiting for a limited S-Class damage dealer — Baicang covers the standard S-Class Incantation DPS role, which leaves a gap Zankou fills directly. If you own Daffodill, Baicang or Lacrimosa, she slots in immediately.
Consider carefully if your roster is built elsewhere. She's a strong character, but her value concentrates in Scorch and Hexed teams, and dropping her into a squad that generates neither wastes the half of her kit that supports rather than damages.
Remember Linko is next. Her banner opens on 9 September, the day Zankou's closes. NTE's pity carries forward between banners, so pulling on Zankou isn't a wasted commitment even if you stop short — but budget with both in mind. Our Version 1.1 launch guide covers how pity carryover works in practice.
Before 19 August
- Bank Annulith and Fabricated Dice. Nine days of dailies and event clears is a meaningful total.
- Finish Version 1.2 content. Event modes and reward tracks close with the version — our 999 Nights breakdown covers what's still claimable before the 19th.
- Redeem active codes. Special Programs typically distribute new ones, and NTE codes expire quickly — check our code roundup before they lapse.
- Pre-farm her materials once the requirements are visible in-game, so she's usable on day one rather than in week three.
