eFootball Managers Guide: Coaching Affinity and How to Pick One
By Sir Ayup
An eFootball manager decides more than your team's tactics: through Team Playstyle Proficiency, a manager boosts your players' individual stats, and the best managers can add boosters and Link-up Play on top. When choosing one, start with the team playstyle that suits how you play, then pick the manager with the highest proficiency in it that you can afford. Older managers also list a Coaching Affinity, which affects how quickly certain players gain experience rather than how they perform in matches.
This guide explains what a manager actually does in eFootball, how proficiency, Coaching Affinity, boosters and Link-up Play work, and how to pick the right manager for your squad.
What a Manager Does in eFootball

Every Dream Team squad in eFootball needs a manager, and the manager affects your team in three ways:
- Team playstyle. The manager sets the tactical approach your team uses, such as Possession Game or Quick Counter.
- Proficiency boosts. How skilled the manager is at that playstyle determines how much your players' stats are boosted.
- Extra features. Some managers add boosters for certain players or Link-up Play between specific roles.
This is why the same squad can feel noticeably different under two managers, even before you change a single player.
Team Playstyles

Each manager has a proficiency rating for each team playstyle. The main ones are:
- Possession Game: patient build-up through short passing.
- Quick Counter: win the ball high and attack quickly.
- Long Ball Counter: defend deep, then hit long balls forward.
- Out Wide: attack through the flanks and crosses.
- Long Ball: direct play with long passes into the front line.
Recent versions have added more options, so check what the current game offers. There is no single best playstyle in eFootball: the right one depends on how each tactic plays on the pitch and what it asks of your players.
Choose the playstyle first, based on how you like to attack and defend, then look for a manager who is strong in it. A great manager in the wrong playstyle for you will feel worse than a good manager in the right one.
How Proficiency Boosts Your Players
Proficiency is the number that matters most. A manager's proficiency in their chosen playstyle adds small boosts to your players' attributes:
- The boost applies to each stat individually, usually adding +1, +2 or +3 depending on the stat's value.
- Higher proficiency widens the range of stats that get the bigger boosts.
- The effect becomes significant around the mid-80s and above, which is why top managers sit in the high 80s.
Because the boost is per stat, the gain from one proficiency point to the next is not always visible in a player's overall rating. It shows up in specific attributes, which can matter in close matches. Building your squad around formations, roles and proficiency gets the most out of a high-proficiency manager.
Coaching Affinity

Coaching Affinity is a manager trait that boosts how much experience a certain group of players earns from matches. It does not make them stronger during a match. It makes them level up faster.
Affinities have targeted groups such as:
- Young players under a certain age.
- Veteran players above a certain age.
- Players by position, such as forwards, midfielders or defenders.
- Higher-rated players.
Coaching Affinity is useful when you are developing new players, since matching the affinity to the players you are levelling saves a lot of time. Once your main players are fully trained, proficiency and boosters matter far more. Check each manager's description in the game, since not every manager carries an affinity, and the details have changed over time.
Boosters and Link-up Play

The strongest managers add more than proficiency:
- Boosters give extra stat bonuses to players who meet certain conditions, on top of the proficiency boost.
- Link-up Play pairs two players: a Centrepiece, who triggers the move when receiving the ball in a certain area, and a Key Man, who makes a run in response. Each link-up type also boosts the attributes involved, such as passing or finishing.
To get value from Link-up Play, your squad needs players who fit the required roles. A manager with a crossing link-up, for example, only helps if you have a capable crosser and a striker to finish.
How to Get Managers

Managers come from a few sources:
- The standard selection, with many managers available for GP.
- Manager packs and featured managers, usually bought with Coins, often with higher proficiency or extra features.
- Campaign and event rewards, which sometimes include managers.
GP is the cheaper route and works well for most players. Coins are better saved for managers who clearly fit your playstyle and squad, and knowing what Coins are best used for helps you decide whether a manager pack is worth it.
How to Pick the Right Manager
- Choose your team playstyle based on how you like to play.
- Filter managers by that playstyle and compare proficiency.
- Prefer high proficiency in the mid-to-high 80s if your budget allows.
- Check for boosters and Link-up Play, and make sure your squad has players who can use them.
- Use a Coaching Affinity manager temporarily when training new players, then switch back.
- Match your formation to the manager's style, so players are in roles that suit it. Beginner-friendly formations are a good base to adjust from.
Common Mistakes
- Choosing a manager for their name. Proficiency and features matter, not reputation.
- Ignoring the playstyle. A strong manager in a style you do not play will not help much.
- Spending Coins on a small upgrade. Moving from a good manager to a slightly better one rarely changes results as much as improving a key player.
- Keeping a training manager for matches after your players are levelled.
Building the Rest of Your Squad
A manager amplifies the squad you already have. If you are still building yours, it helps to understand how player cards, Coins and squads work together before committing resources to a high-end manager.
If you would rather start with a strong squad already built, you can pick up one of the eFootball Accounts with top managers and Epic players, hand events and campaigns to a player through eFootball Hourly Services, or reach division and event goals with eFootball Boosting.
