The Uprising is live in Fortnite now, and it's a stranger thing than most film tie-ins: a 5v5 payload-escort mode set in 1380s England, where Rebels fight Kingsmen for the gates of London.

Payload escort is the interesting part

Most film crossovers in Fortnite are a skin bundle and a themed deathmatch. This is a custom 5v5 payload-escort mode — one team pushes an objective toward a destination, the other stops it.

That's a format Fortnite's official rotation doesn't use. It belongs to a different lineage entirely, and it changes what the match asks of you: position and timing matter more than aim, because the payload only moves when your team is near it and stops when contested.

No guns

Weapons are era-inspired: melee and bows. That's not a cosmetic reskin of Fortnite's usual arsenal — it removes the entire ranged-hitscan layer the game normally runs on.

The practical effect is that engagements are slower and more committal. Bows have travel time and arc, so leading targets matters. Melee means closing distance, and closing distance in an objective mode means choosing your moment rather than trading at range whenever you see someone.

Players who lean on Fortnite's building and edit skills will find those less decisive here than usual. This is a mode about pushing and holding a point, not about winning box fights.

The in-match economy

You earn currency during the match and spend it on health, speed and damage upgrades.

That's a genuine strategic layer rather than a progression cosmetic. A team that banks upgrades for a late push plays differently from one that buys incrementally and stays consistently slightly stronger.

It also means early-round performance compounds — the team winning fights earns more currency, which buys more upgrades, which wins more fights. Coming back from behind requires a deliberate plan rather than gradual improvement.

The history is real

Worth knowing, because it's unusual for a Fortnite mode to have one.

The Uprising dramatises the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, a genuine English rebellion led by Wat Tyler and the preacher John Ball. Andrew Garfield's character, Ploughman, is written as an everyman peasant pushed by circumstance into taking up arms against the crown. Cosmo Jarvis plays Tyler, Jamie Bell plays Ball, and Paul Greengrass directs.

So "Rebels versus Kingsmen" isn't arbitrary team colouring. It's the actual sides of a real uprising — commoners against the royal establishment — and the mode lets you play either. Choosing to defend the kingdom is a meaningfully different proposition when the rebellion is one you know historically failed.

That's more thought than a promotional map usually gets.

Sawhorse Productions developed it. Genesis Studios published it. Focus Features partnered on it.

Genesis Studios is worth noting specifically: they won Island of the Year 2025 at The Game Awards, which puts them among the more accomplished UEFN studios rather than a shop assembled for a film tie-in.

That matters for expectations. Promotional Fortnite maps have a reputation for being thin, and this one comes from a team with a track record.

What isn't known

• How long the experience stays available. No end date has been published, and film tie-in maps often close after the theatrical window.
• Whether any cosmetic rewards or quests attach to playing it.
• Player count per lobby beyond the 5v5 structure, and whether private matches are supported.
• Whether the mode receives updates after the film's release.

That first point is the one to act on. Free promotional experiences tied to a release date frequently disappear afterwards, so if you want to play it, the safe assumption is that the window closes sometime after 10 September.

What to expect going in

Don't build. The mode's weapon set and objective structure make Fortnite's usual building game far less relevant.

Coordinate the payload. Solo queuing into an objective mode without communication is the usual way these experiences feel worse than they are. Bring a squad if you can.
