Fortnite New Sprites: X-Ray, Onigiri & What We Know

Three new Sprites arrive in Fortnite on 3 September with the v42.10 update, and two of them come from the community. X-Ray Sprite and Onigiri Sprite are Design-A-Sprite contest winners — picked from over 20,000 submissions.

The third is a mystery. Epic has confirmed a Sprite is coming with them, but its name and power haven't been published.

What X-Ray and Onigiri do

X-Ray Sprite grants temporary wall-hack vision, revealing opponents through structures. In a game built on building and holding position, an ability that removes the information advantage of cover is more disruptive than it sounds — particularly in end-game circles where players are boxed in.

Onigiri Sprite empowers consumables to give extra health. That's a sustain buff rather than an information one, and it rewards a slower, resource-heavy playstyle. It also pairs naturally with Sprites that already interact with consumables.

The two cover opposite ends of the Sprite design space: one gives you information, one gives you survivability.

The third Sprite is genuinely unclear

Coverage of the update disagrees on the third Sprite. Some sources describe it as a Knight Sprite; others simply list it as an Unknown Sprite.

Neither name has been confirmed with an ability attached, and Epic hasn't published its power. That makes it the one part of this update where speculation is running ahead of information, so treat any claimed ability for it as unverified until the patch is live.

The Bullet Sprite is gone

A change worth flagging for anyone who was looking forward to it.

Epic swapped the Bullet Sprite for the Onigiri Sprite — the same designer's alternative submission — and confirmed the change publicly. The Bullet-themed Sprite is reportedly no longer coming this season.

That's an unusual move for a contest result, and it means any guide or leak listing the Bullet Sprite as upcoming Season 4 content is now out of date.

Two of five winners, with more to come

The Design-A-Sprite contest produced five winners, and only two arrive on 3 September. The remaining three — including designs themed around dumpster diving, honey and a pond — are confirmed as coming later this season, without dates.

Epic described the contest as drawing over 20,000 community designs, which is the context that makes these two arrivals worth more than a typical Sprite drop. They're the first community-created Sprites to reach the live game.

If you're collecting, the practical takeaway is that Season 4's Sprite roster isn't finished. Completing your set now means completing it again in a few weeks.

What else arrives on 3 September

The Sprites are part of a larger update.

Two new Match Overrides:

• Big Heads, returning from this year's April Fool's event
• Prop Hunt, which turns players into objects so they can blend into the environment

Six new Loot Hacks:

• Rocket Ram
• Gold Banana
• Tracking Visor
• Holo Twister Assault Rifle
• Deadeye Assault Rifle
• Wrecker Revolver

These replace the current Loot Hack pool, which had been dominated by Sonic Power Sneakers.

Sprite Dust is now doing two jobs

Here's the systems detail worth understanding, because it changes how you should spend.

The three new Loot Hack weapons must be unlocked in the Loot Hack menu using Sprite Dust before they can appear in Chests during matches. They don't simply enter the loot pool.

That means Sprite Dust now gates weapon access, not just Sprite progression. A currency that previously fed one system now feeds two competing ones, and spending it on Sprite mastery is spending it away from weapon unlocks.

Anyone who has been banking Dust for Sprite upgrades should decide deliberately which system they're funding — and Cheat Code Monday events, which grant double Sprite XP and Sprite Dust, become more valuable as a result.

What isn't known

• The third Sprite's name and ability.
• Release dates for the remaining three contest winners.
• Sprite drop rates, which remain unpublished across the board.
• Exact Sprite Dust costs for the new Loot Hack weapon unlocks.
• Whether the removed Bullet Sprite returns in any form.

There's also a version number discrepancy in circulation — some coverage lists the update as v41.10, other coverage as v42.10. Check the patch number in-game rather than relying on either.

What to do on 3 September

Check the Sprite Reset timing. Reporting indicates the new Sprites become available after the daily Sprite Reset rather than immediately when servers return, so the patch going live and the Sprites appearing may not be the same moment.

Decide what your Sprite Dust is for. Weapon unlocks and Sprite mastery now draw from the same pool.

Don't rush to complete your Sprite collection. Three more contest winners arrive later this season, so a "complete" set isn't complete yet.

Try Prop Hunt early. New Overrides tend to be most chaotic in their first days, before the community works out the counterplay.

Ignore third-party ability claims for the unnamed Sprite until the patch is live.
