Zenless Zone Zero Version 2.8 "New: Eridan Sunset" launched on May 6, 2026 as the grand finale of Season 2 — and it's one of the most content-packed updates since the game launched. Two new S-Rank Agents, a major story conclusion, a free Bangboo, the Steam launch announcement, and the first look at what's coming in Season 3. Here's everything.

🌆 What Is Version 2.8 — The Season 2 Finale

Version 2.8 wraps up the entire Season 2 storyline that has been building since the game's second year launch. The update closes out the Ramiel investigation arc, introduces the first Physical Rupture Agent in the game's history, and serves as a direct bridge into Version 3.0 and the Season 3 era that begins on June 17. Version 2.8 runs until June 16, 2026, giving Proxies just over a month to clear all events, complete the story, and prepare for what comes next — starting with Phase 2's Starlight Billy banner on May 27.

❄️ New Agent — Promeia (Phase 1)

Promeia is the Season 2 story's breakout character made playable — the executioner of the Black Branch of Krampus and the intelligence operative who formed a temporary alliance with the Phaethon siblings to uncover Ramiel's identity and true intentions. Her debut runs from May 6 to May 27, 2026.

In combat, Promeia is the first Ice Anomaly Agent in Zenless Zone Zero's roster — a unique position that opens up new team compositions around the Anomaly archetype. Her kit operates on a three-stage loop: her attacks accumulate Cryo Erosion stacks on enemies, which she then converts into Frost Penalty, and consuming Frost Penalty inflicts the Blossom effect — a delayed burst of Ice damage that interacts with other Anomaly triggers on the target. Her signature W-Engine is Frostfall Sickle, which enhances her Cryo Erosion accumulation rate and Blossom damage output.

For Anomaly team players, Promeia fills a gap the roster has had since launch. Ice Anomaly compositions were entirely absent before her arrival. The rerun banner running alongside her features Lucia, with Soukaku and Lucy as the featured A-Rank rate-ups — both of whom synergize with Anomaly-oriented lineups.

⚡ New Agent — Starlight Billy (Phase 2, May 27)

Starlight Billy debuts in Phase 2 of Version 2.8 starting May 27, 2026 — and she brings something the game has never had before: a Physical Rupture kit. Starlight Billy is the first S-Rank Physical Rupture Agent in Zenless Zone Zero, and her arrival is timed perfectly with a new enemy type introduced in 2.8 called "Void-touched." These enemies resist standard Anomaly effects but take significantly increased damage from Rupture — a deliberate design that makes Starlight Billy the natural counter for the new content tier.

Her signature W-Engine is Starlight Rider Faceplate. The rerun banner alongside her features Orphie and Magus, with Pan Yinhu and Manato as the A-Rank rate-ups. If you've been holding Polychromes through Phase 1, Phase 2 is the window to spend them.

🤖 Free Bangboo — Booltergeist

Booltergeist is the new A-Rank Bangboo added in Version 2.8 and it's obtainable completely free through the Operation: Save Bootopia event. In combat, Booltergeist hovers in the air and fires lasers, dealing increased damage when specific teammates are present in your party. This is one of the more combat-relevant free Bangboos released in recent patches — don't miss the event window to claim it.

📖 Story — Epilogue: New: Eridan Sunset

Version 2.8's Epilogue quest "New: Eridan Sunset" continues directly from where Version 2.7 left off. Multiple factions across New Eridu are pursuing Ramiel — a mysterious target whose identity and intentions have been kept deliberately obscured since they first surfaced. Promeia joins the investigation as a Krampus intelligence contact, forming an uneasy alliance with the Phaethon siblings, Starlight Billy, and Cissia to close in on the truth.

The story takes an unexpected turn in Phase 1 that appears to set up a significant shift in the Proxies' combat capabilities going forward. Based on the update notes, the Proxies encounter something in the Outer Ring that could transform into a new power they can harness — which likely connects directly to the Roscaelifer arc and the abilities teased in the Version 3.0 reveal. Clear the Epilogue as soon as possible: it contains some of the best writing in Season 2 and directly sets up everything coming in June.

🎪 Events — What to Clear First

Operation: Save Bootopia is the headline event and the one to prioritize above all others — it's the only way to claim Booltergeist, and missing it means waiting for a potential rerun that may not come quickly. The event casts Proxies as a Bangboo tasked with rescuing companions across an island. It's a lighter exploration format that doesn't require high combat investment, making it accessible for all progression levels.

Eridan Sunset Event is the story-adjacent limited event running throughout the full 2.8 patch. Completing its story chapters rewards Polychromes, upgrade materials, and a free W-Engine. Total clear time is roughly two to three hours — front-load this one early to stay on top of the upgrade material and avoid falling behind on the free W-Engine window.

Ultimate Verdict Trial is the combat mission event featuring Promeia. If you pulled her during Phase 1, this event is where her kit performs exactly as designed. Polychrome rewards are locked behind difficulty tiers, so push as high as your roster allows.

"Spirit" Artist's Notebook is a commission-style event where Proxies track down wanted NPCs across New Eridu. More relaxed pacing than the combat events, but the Polychrome rewards are worth completing at your own speed throughout the patch.

Back in Business (Returning Player Event) — if you or anyone you know has been away from ZZZ for at least 14 days, Version 2.8 is the time to return. The returning player event has been upgraded in 2.8 to include free Polychromes, double drops from key farming locations, and bonus mission rewards. The easiest onboarding for returning Proxies the game has offered.

🎨 New Outfit — Hoshimi Miyabi: Dignified Blossom

Miyabi receives her first new outfit in Version 2.8 — Dignified Blossom, styled after the classic aesthetic of the Hoshimi family. It's available in the store from the version launch at a discounted price during the 2.8 patch window. If you run Miyabi regularly, the discount makes this the best window to pick it up before the price returns to standard.

⚙️ New Features — Polychrome Tracker and Steam

The Polychrome Guide is one of the most genuinely useful quality-of-life additions Version 2.8 introduces. It's a new in-game interface that shows every obtainable limited-time and permanent Polychrome source across all game modes — essentially a pull-resource tracker that eliminates the need to consult external spreadsheets to plan your next banner. Open it from the main menu after updating and use it to assess exactly how many pulls you can realistically accumulate before Phase 2's banner ends on June 16.

Game Package Management has also been improved. Proxies can now choose between a base install or a full resource download on first installation, and a new auto-delete function clears unused files in settings to reclaim storage space. Both changes are active immediately after the update.

The Steam launch for Zenless Zone Zero is confirmed for Q2 2026. The store page is already live — adding ZZZ to your Steam Wishlist contributes to a community milestone that unlocks free Polychrome rewards for all players across all platforms, regardless of where they play. Wishlist it even if you never play on Steam.

⚔️ New Enemy Type — Void-Touched

Version 2.8 introduces a new enemy classification called Void-Touched in the updated Shiyu Defense and content rotations. Void-Touched enemies resist standard Anomaly damage effects but take significantly increased damage from Rupture — which Starlight Billy deals. This isn't a hard wall for Anomaly players, but it does reward Proxies who have invested in Rupture compositions and provides a meaningful use case for Starlight Billy the moment she debuts in Phase 2.

🔭 What's Next — Season 3 Is Coming Fast

Phase 2 opens May 27 with Starlight Billy's debut banner. The 3.0 Special Program is expected around June 5, dropping three codes worth 300 Polychrome that expire within 24 hours — set a reminder now. Version 3.0 "A Sleepwalker's Confession" launches June 17, opening Season 3 and the Roscaelifer arc. Roscaelifer is a floating city that represents ZZZ's largest new exploration zone since New Eridu itself, and the three confirmed new characters — Pyrois, Velina, and Norma — will headline the Season 3 opening banners. Version 2.9 is being skipped entirely, so the jump from 2.8 to 3.0 is direct.
