What the Leopard 2A8 Changes for Top-Tier Tanks in War Thunder
By Sir Ayup
The Leopard 2A8 is finally on its way to War Thunder. Gaijin revealed the latest member of the Leopard family on October 30 as part of the upcoming "Eagle's Shadow" major update, and it arrives with something few ground vehicles in the game can match: an Israeli Trophy active protection system with all-around coverage. Germany and Sweden both get a version at Rank VIII. At gamemarket.gg, we went through the official devblog to explain what the Leopard 2A8 brings, how it compares with earlier Leopards and what is still subject to change.
A Rank VIII Leopard for Two Nations
Leopard 2A8: An MBT for Germany and Sweden at Rank VIII
The Leopard 2A8 lands in two tech trees at once:
- Germany: the standard Leopard 2A8
- Sweden: a variant configured for the Norwegian Army
Both versions sit at Rank VIII, the top tier of ground forces. The devblog also explains the real-world background behind the two versions. Germany ordered 123 Leopard 2A8s, while Norway signed a contract for 54, which explains the Norwegian configuration in the Swedish tree.
The devblog does not describe the 2A8 as a premium or event vehicle. It mentions packs that can "greatly speed up the research" of the tank, which points to it being a researchable tech tree vehicle.
Trophy APS: The Headline Feature
The biggest addition is protection. The Leopard 2A8 comes with the Israeli Trophy active protection system, which:
- carries 6 charges
- provides all-around protection
- can intercept ATGMs launched from the ground or from the air
That last point matters at top tier, where helicopters and aircraft with guided missiles are a constant threat. An APS that also covers air-launched missiles gives the 2A8 an extra answer to attacks from above.
Armor and Crew Protection
On top of the APS, the 2A8 carries a heavier armor package than earlier Leopards:
- an internal spall liner to reduce damage from fragments after a penetration
- additional frontal hull armor
- extra composite armor modules on the sides
Gaijin describes its overall protection as a "good level", and the developers expect the combination of armor and Trophy to make the 2A8 "one of the strongest MBTs in the game."
Firepower and Optics
The Leopard 2A8 uses a long-barreled cannon. Its stock APFSDS round already has great penetration, according to the devblog, but the real upgrade comes with research. Once unlocked, the DM53 APFSDS round is described as superior to the stock shell.
The tank also features third-generation thermal imagers, which help with spotting and engaging targets at long range or in poor visibility.
The devblog does not list exact penetration values for either round, so those numbers will become clearer once players test the tank on the dev server.
The Trade-Off: Weight and Mobility
All that extra protection comes at a cost. The 2A8 is a heavy tank, and Gaijin notes that its mobility is somewhat reduced compared to the Leopard 2A4 and 2A5.
Exact figures for engine power, weight and top speed are not included in the devblog. Players who are used to the agility of earlier Leopards should expect a slower, more defensive playstyle that relies on armor and Trophy rather than speed.
New Leopard Packs
Alongside the reveal, Gaijin introduced two Rank VII packs:
- Leopard 2A4M CAN Pack for Germany
- Strv 121B Christian II Pack for Sweden
Each pack includes the vehicle, 20 days of Premium Account and 2,500 Golden Eagles, priced at 69.99. These are the packs the devblog says can speed up research toward the Leopard 2A8.
When Can You Play It?
The Leopard 2A8 is part of the Eagle's Shadow major update. The dev server for the update opened on October 30 at 16:00 GMT and is scheduled to close on November 7 at 07:00 GMT, although Gaijin notes it may close earlier for technical reasons.
A release date for Eagle's Shadow itself has not been announced yet. Gaijin also reminds players that vehicle specifications may change before the tank reaches the live game.
The 2A8 joins a run of top-tier reveals ahead of Eagle's Shadow, following vehicles like the Leopard Leclerc EMBT, which takes a very different approach to blending two tank designs. If you are working through the current season in the meantime, the Steel Fury Battle Pass runs until January 20, 2027, so there is plenty of time to finish its vehicles and rewards.
With Trophy APS, a stronger armor package and DM53 on the way, the Leopard 2A8 is set to become a priority grind for German and Swedish players. Keep an eye on the dev server results, and get your Rank VII lineup ready before Eagle's Shadow goes live.
