Umamusume Wings of Iron — Narita Taishin & Winning Ticket Guide
By John Ganang
The Umamusume: Pretty Derby "Wings of Iron: Hazy Tales" story event is live now, running from July 26 to August 8, 2026, and it bundles two decisions into one steampunk-themed package: which of the two new banner alts deserves your scouting tickets, and how to squeeze the free Stamina SSR out of the story rewards. The short version, and the sharpest thing to know before you spend, is that the free Biwa Hayahide is a claim-it-regardless freebie while the two steampunk uma — End Closer Narita Taishin and Late Surger Winning Ticket — are roster-fit pulls, not must-haves. This guide breaks down the event story, both characters' builds, the free reward, and exactly who should roll for what, for Trainers of every level.
⚙️ Event Overview — What "Wings of Iron" Actually Is
Before the character math, it helps to know what kind of event you are logging into, because that shapes how you spend your energy. Wings of Iron: Hazy Tales is a limited story event, not a competitive Champions Meeting, so the pressure here is on clearing story stages for rewards rather than climbing a PvP ladder. It runs a tight two-week window, closing August 8, which is enough time to finish at a relaxed pace but short enough that you should not leave the free SSR sitting unclaimed.
The steampunk theme is more than a coat of paint. The event dresses its cast in brass-and-gear aesthetics and pairs that with two alternate versions of familiar uma, so even veterans who own the originals get genuinely new units to train. Because the story stages are the reward faucet, the practical loop is simple: progress the narrative, bank the event currency and materials, and use them to support whichever of the new girls you decide to build.
📖 The Story — Advance Testers of a Steampunk World
The narrative gives the event its charm and its name. Five members — Narita Taishin, Biwa Hayahide, Tokai Teio, Twin Turbo, and Winning Ticket — take on the role of CM models and advance testers for a brand-new game built around a steampunk setting, and the "Hazy Tales" framing lets the writers play with a world of iron wings and clockwork wonder. It is a light, character-driven story rather than a lore-heavy chapter, which fits an event whose real purpose is to hand out a support card and debut two banner units.
That cast list matters for one concrete reason: because Biwa Hayahide is written into the story, finishing the event is what unlocks her as a reward. So the story you are reading for fun is also the delivery mechanism for the freebie, which means there is no way to skip the narrative and still collect the SSR.
🏇 Narita Taishin (Steampunk) — the Versatile End Closer
Of the two banner alts, Narita Taishin is the more flexible pickup, and her strength comes from how well her aptitudes and her Unique Skill line up. She is built as an End Closer, the running style that hangs at the back of the pack and surges past everyone in the final stretch, and she brings aptitude for Turf across Medium and Long distances. Her stat bonuses lean into that plan with a 14% Wit boost alongside 8% Guts and 8% Stamina, so she is naturally tuned for the longer races where an End Closer's late kick has room to work.
Her Unique Skill, Hephaestus, is what makes the End Closer style click: it boosts her speed when she is positioned in the middle of the pack during the second half of the race after the final corner. Because that trigger rewards a late-race surge from mid-pack, it pairs with acceleration skills to catapult her from the back into the lead. Prioritize From the Brink for the strong late-race acceleration that activates early in the final leg, and Breakin' Ahead for extra mid-race velocity to keep her in striking position. For aptitude training, most Trainers push 3★ Long then 3★ Turf to pile on speed and power, adding 3★ End Closer if room remains. She shines brightest in Medium races, where From the Brink fires early enough to matter.
🎫 Winning Ticket (Steampunk) — the Late Surger Specialist
Winning Ticket takes the other great late-race style and specializes harder, which makes her the pick for Trainers who specifically want a Late Surger. Where the End Closer waits until the very end, the Late Surger begins its charge a little earlier from the rear third of the pack, and Winning Ticket is built for Turf at Medium distance. Her bonuses reflect a more aggressive profile than Taishin's, with 14% Power plus 8% Speed and 8% Guts, so she is tuned to push through traffic rather than glide around it.
She carries an A-rank Late Surger aptitude, and most of her kit only activates in that style, so run her as a Late Surger or you waste half her skills. Her standout is Our Ticket to Win!, which grants a final-straight velocity boost if she was blocked briefly during the final corner or later and then breaks away to place 5th or better. That conditional is worth understanding: because it rewards fighting out of a blocked position, she wants enough Power and Guts to muscle through the pack instead of getting stuck. Support that payoff with Late Surger Straightaways and Straightaway Acceleration for straight-line speed, Relax to recover endurance late, and max her Potential to unlock Fast & Furious for a mid-race velocity bump. In plain terms, she is a scrappier runner who turns getting boxed in into a launchpad.
🎁 The Free Reward — Biwa Hayahide (Stamina SSR)
Whatever you decide on the banner, the event's guaranteed prize is the part nobody should skip. Completing Wings of Iron: Hazy Tales rewards a free Biwa Hayahide Stamina SSR support card, and a free SSR is always worth claiming because support cards are the backbone of every training run regardless of which uma you are raising. Stamina support in particular smooths out the Long and Medium races where a runner can fade in the final corner, so this card slots usefully into decks well beyond the two steampunk girls.
The reason this reshapes the value math is straightforward: because you get a strong support card for free just by playing the story, the event already pays for itself before you spend a single ticket on the banner. That lowers the stakes on the pull decision, since you are choosing whether to add a nice-to-have runner rather than whether the event was worth your time at all.
🤔 Should You Roll — and for Whom?
With the freebie secured, the banner question comes down to what your stable is missing rather than which uma looks best in brass goggles. Both alts are strong, so let your roster make the call.
- Roll Narita Taishin if you want a flexible late-race runner for Medium and Long Turf, or you lack a reliable End Closer. Her Wit and Stamina bias and her early-firing acceleration make her the safer all-rounder of the two.
- Roll Winning Ticket if you specifically need a Late Surger for Medium Turf, or you are building toward Champions Meetings and cups where that style is favored. Her Power-forward profile rewards aggressive running.
- Roll neither and just take the freebie if you already own solid End Closers and Late Surgers, since neither alt is a must-have upgrade and the free Biwa Hayahide is the real prize.
The mistake to avoid is rolling on both banners because the theme is appealing. Because your scouting resources are finite and Champions Meeting seasons reward focused investment, spreading pulls across two runners you will rarely field is worse than committing to the one style your team actually needs. 💡 Event Training Tips
Once you have picked a target, a few habits get the most out of the two-week window. Each one connects back to the same goal of turning event time into permanent roster value.
- Clear the story stages first to bank the free Biwa Hayahide and the event materials, since those rewards are the whole reason to log in and they gate nothing behind PvP.
- Match the running style to the aptitude. Train Taishin as an End Closer and Winning Ticket as a Late Surger, because both kits are wasted if you force them into a style their skills do not support.
- Prioritize the trigger skills. From the Brink for Taishin and Our Ticket to Win! for Winning Ticket are the skills their whole race plan is built around, so learn those before rounding out with generic speed passives.
- Fold in the free SSR immediately. Slot Biwa Hayahide's Stamina support into your next training deck so the freebie starts paying off in the same event it came from.
Handled this way, Wings of Iron gives back more than the fortnight it costs: a free Stamina SSR that upgrades your deck permanently, and the choice of a steampunk End Closer or Late Surger tuned to whatever your stable is missing.
