League of Legends Mel Rework: W, Q, E & Patch 26.22 Preview
By Sir Ayup
League of Legends Mel's midscope update is planned for Patch 26.22, scheduled for November 4, 2026, and the biggest change is the removal of Rebuttal's ability reflection. Her W will still stop enemy projectiles, but instead of sending their spells back, it will protect allies with a shield and movement speed while dealing a small amount of retaliatory damage. The update also adjusts Radiant Volley (Q), Solar Snare (E), her passive, and her ultimate. The goal is to make Mel less frustrating to face in lane without stripping away the ability-focused mage gameplay that her players enjoy.
Mel Rework at a Glance

The midscope was outlined on October 20, 2026. It is a preview of planned gameplay changes, not a live update in Patch 26.21.
- Target patch: 26.22, scheduled for November 4, 2026.
- W — Rebuttal: Loses spell reflection. Its new nova destroys projectiles, shields the team, grants movement speed, and deals minor retaliation damage.
- Q — Radiant Volley: Becomes slightly slower, shifts more damage into later hits, and receives a cooldown refund when it hits at least one enemy champion.
- E — Solar Snare: Roots nearby targets for less time and more distant targets for longer.
- Passive — Searing Brilliance: Gives up some early damage as the update shifts power toward scaling and repeated ability rotations.
- Ultimate — Golden Eclipse: Gains more cooldown reduction as the ability levels up.
- Base stats: Less early durability, offset by stronger health and armor growth.
These are the changes described in the developer preview. Exact final damage values, cooldown numbers, and other balance details should be checked against the Patch 26.22 notes when they are published.
Why Mel Is Getting a Midscope Update
The problem behind the rework is more specific than Mel being simply too strong or too weak. Rebuttal's reflection gives her a particularly sharp answer to certain enemy abilities. For opponents, the possibility of having an important spell reflected can shape the entire fight, even when Mel's overall performance is not especially high.

After her original release, Mel's ban rate eventually settled around 15%–30%, with a roughly 48%–49% win rate and a comparatively high pick rate. The developer update says that, by the middle of 2026, her ban rate had remained around the same level while her win rate slipped to 45%–47% and her pick rate fell to less than half its earlier level.

Those figures help explain the decision to rebuild part of her kit rather than apply a straightforward damage buff. Her reflection remained unpopular for opponents, while giving her enough additional strength to feel consistently effective risked making that same interaction even harder to tolerate.
The team tested other approaches before settling on the announced W. One experiment shortened Mel's range, but that pushed her too far from the style her players already knew. Another let her steal and cast a copy of an incoming missile spell. That version introduced its own problems: Mel players would need to understand unfamiliar projectiles, and fights became difficult to read when several spells were involved.
The developers also considered moving reflection to her ultimate. They rejected that idea because Golden Eclipse already acts as an important payoff for her mage combat pattern. Swapping the abilities would have changed how players leveled and used both spells, while a powerful reflect on an ultimate cooldown could still create the same frustrating situations.
That leaves a clearer direction: keep Mel's ability to protect against projectiles, remove the ability to turn an opponent's own spell back on them, and redistribute power into the rest of her kit.
W Rebuttal: Projectile Protection Without Reflection

Rebuttal is the central change. The current version can reflect enemy spells, making certain projectile abilities particularly risky to use against her. The planned version will no longer reproduce and return those incoming abilities.
Instead, activating W will release a nova that destroys enemy projectiles. The effect also grants a shield and movement speed to Mel's team, then retaliates against attacks for a small amount of damage. That retains a defensive purpose for W, but the result is different: the new ability helps protect teammates rather than turning an enemy's high-impact spell into Mel's own counterattack.
The distinction matters when looking at the examples given in the developer explanation. Under the existing reflection mechanic, Mel can send a Seraphine ultimate back toward the opposing team or punish Jhin with a reflected Fourth Shot. The midscope version removes those spell-reflection outcomes. Blocking a projectile and reflecting its entire effect are no longer the same action.
The preview does not give a final shield value, movement-speed percentage, cooldown, or exact retaliation damage. Those numbers should not be inferred from W's older version. The confirmed direction is the new defensive nova, ally protection, and removal of spell reflection.
The developer team expects this W to be less disruptive for opponents. It also expects the ability to have less impact in some situations than the old reflect, which is why other parts of Mel's kit are receiving adjustments rather than leaving the rest of her damage pattern unchanged.
Q Radiant Volley: Less Frontloaded Damage, More Follow-Up

Radiant Volley is being changed on two fronts: how its damage arrives and how it connects to subsequent spell casts.
First, Q will be slightly slower, with more of its damage moved away from the first explosion and into subsequent hits. The aim is to give opponents a fairer opportunity to react during lane trades. A spell that relies less heavily on its opening impact also places more weight on landing the rest of the volley.
Second, Q will refund a flat amount of cooldown when it hits at least one enemy champion. This is one of the most important changes to Mel's ability rotation, because the update is explicitly intended to help her build multiple rounds of Searing Brilliance stacks rather than stopping after one sequence of spells.
These two changes pull in different directions on purpose. Mel's opening damage becomes less reliable against an opponent who avoids follow-up hits, but connecting Q to a champion helps her reach another cast sooner. Her damage pattern is being shifted from early, frontloaded pressure toward repeated casts and scaling over the course of a fight.
The preview does not confirm the final size of the cooldown refund or the precise damage distribution across Q's hits. Until those figures are in final patch notes, it would be premature to give a new optimal combo or claim that a specific build benefits most.
E Solar Snare: Root Duration Now Rewards Range

Solar Snare's root is also being adjusted, but the change is about where it hits, not simply a blanket increase or decrease to crowd control.
According to the announcement, the root will last for a shorter duration against enemies close to Mel and a longer duration against targets farther away. This makes nearby threats more difficult to hold in place for as long, while rewarding a successful long-range E with a longer root.
That fits the wider objective of the midscope. Mel is intended to be more vulnerable in matchups where opponents reach her, instead of combining strong early defensive options with reliable crowd control at close range. At the same time, the rework continues to reward players who land their ranged skillshots.
No exact distance thresholds or new root durations were supplied in the developer preview. Those details will determine the final practical difference between close- and long-range hits, so they should be left out of a confirmed-stat guide until the official numbers are available.
Passive, Base Stats, and Ultimate: Why Scaling Matters
Q, W, and E are the visible centerpieces, but the planned midscope also changes where Mel gets her overall strength.
Her passive, Searing Brilliance, is part of the reason the developer team wants longer spell rotations. The original ability grants bonus projectiles to her next attack after she uses spells, while damage from abilities and attacks applies Overwhelm. Once enough Overwhelm damage has built up, the stacks can be consumed to execute a target.
The updated direction is to lower some of the passive's early damage rather than let Mel keep all of her original lane pressure alongside the redesigned W. The team is also reducing early durability in exchange for more health and armor gained as she levels.
The change to Q's cooldown refund supports the same plan. It is supposed to make repeated casts and additional Searing Brilliance stacks easier to reach in a fight. Rather than centering Mel's output on one enemy during a single rotation, the developers want her to have more opportunities to continue dealing damage.
Golden Eclipse, her ultimate, is receiving more cooldown reduction scaling with ability level. That complements the effort to make longer combat sequences more rewarding and keeps the ultimate in its existing role as an important payoff for her kit.
None of this guarantees that the reworked Mel will be stronger in every matchup. The stated design is a trade: less early durability and frontloaded damage, less oppressive spell reflection, and more emphasis on scaling and landing subsequent abilities. The final balance cannot be judged from the design overview alone.
Mel Rework Release Date and What Is Still Unconfirmed
The midscope is planned for Patch 26.22, which is scheduled for November 4, 2026 on the official 2026 patch calendar. Patch dates can change, and the announced design may still receive tuning before reaching live servers.
For readers following the October release cycle, the existing League of Legends Patch 26.21 preview covers a separate update. Mel's announced midscope belongs to the next scheduled patch, not the True Damage release on October 21. Future coverage can be found in the League of Legends news hub.
Before the rework goes live, the following details still need final confirmation:
- The exact shield, movement-speed, and retaliation values on W.
- Q's final damage distribution, speed adjustment, and cooldown-refund amount.
- The close- and long-range root durations and distance thresholds for E.
- The final passive, health-growth, armor-growth, and ultimate cooldown numbers.
- Whether additional tuning is made before or with Patch 26.22.
The clearest conclusion from the announcement is that Mel is not being rebuilt into a different kind of champion. She is keeping her mage identity and a defensive answer to incoming projectiles, but reflection is being replaced with team protection. Her other adjustments are designed to give opponents more counterplay early while opening room for stronger ability rotations as the game progresses.
