HSR x ZZZ Collab Lands in 4.8: What's Confirmed and What Isn't

HoYoverse used the Version 4.6 Special Program on 20 September to settle the question players have been asking since August: the Honkai: Star Rail × Zenless Zone Zero collaboration arrives in Version 4.8, bringing Ellen and Astra Yao aboard the Astral Express.

That's the entire confirmed announcement. Paths, elements, kits, banner structure — none of it was revealed.

And the leaks filling that gap contradict each other. Here's what's actually known.

The short version

• The collaboration goes live in Version 4.8, expected around 21 December 2026.
• Ellen and Astra Yao are the confirmed characters.
• Their Paths, elements and kits have not been announced.
• Leaks disagree on both characters' roles — treat all of it as unverified.

What HoYoverse actually said

The collaboration officially goes live in Version 4.8. Ellen and Astra Yao will begin their adventure in Star Rail, with more announced later.

That's it. No story details, no event structure, no confirmation of whether it uses a standard banner or a new format.

This is the first direct crossover between two of HoYoverse's modern flagship games, originally announced during the Version 4.5 Special Program on 14 August for a Winter 2026 window. The 4.8 confirmation narrows that window to a specific patch.

It's also two-way. Honkai: Star Rail has revealed its side; Zenless Zone Zero's half hasn't been detailed, though the equivalent timing would place it around ZZZ Version 3.4 or 3.5.

The leaks contradict each other

This is the part worth being careful about, because the gap between what's confirmed and what's circulating is wide.

On Ellen:

• One leak describes her as a 5-star Ice Destruction unit, given away free to all players.
• Another describes her as following the Path of the Hunt.

On Astra Yao:

• One leak describes her as a 5-star Quantum support on a limited collaboration banner.
• Another describes her as an Elation character.

Those aren't compatible readings. Destruction and Hunt are different Paths with different roles. Quantum and Elation aren't even the same category — one is an element, the other a Path — which suggests at least one source is guessing at structure rather than reporting data.

And the "free Ellen" claim has no official backing whatsoever. It's the most repeated detail in circulation and the least supported.

What can reasonably be inferred, and no more: in Zenless Zone Zero, Ellen Joe is an S-Rank Ice Attack agent and Astra Yao is an S-Rank Ether Support. Carrying those identities across is plausible — Ice exists in Star Rail, and Quantum is the closest analogue to Ether. But plausible is not announced.

Treat every role, Path and element claim as unverified until HoYoverse publishes them.

Three versions, one Stellar Jade balance

Here's the practical problem, and it starts before 4.8.

Version 4.5 ends 28 September. Version 4.6, "Dance With the Beast Before Moonrise," launches 28 September and runs to roughly 9 November. Version 4.7 follows, running to roughly 21 December. Version 4.8 — the collaboration — begins around 21 December.

Each of those three versions carries a unit with genuine pull demand:

4.6 brings Pearl — a 5-star Ice character on the Path of Elation, built around Certified Banger and Deep Learning. Certified Banger offsets part of the damage allies take, while Deep Learning studies a chosen teammate's combat data to grant an Enhanced ATK. Selecting another Elation character adds Elation DMG to that attack, and a full Elation team can grant the selected teammate an extra turn.

4.7 brings Aeon ★ Aha — the first playable Aeon in the game's history, a 5-star Quantum character on the Path of Elation.

4.8 brings the collaboration.

Saving for all three is not realistic for most accounts. A full pity reserve takes most of a version to rebuild, and these arrive back to back.

Decide your priority now, while none of the three has a showcase trailer pulling at you. If the collaboration is what you want, that means treating 4.6 and 4.7 as versions to survive rather than versions to spend in.

Why the collaboration is worth weighing carefully

Two considerations pull in opposite directions.

In favour of saving for it: this is the first crossover of its kind between HoYoverse's flagship titles. Collaboration characters in most games don't rerun on a predictable schedule, and a licence-free internal crossover still depends on the studio choosing to bring it back.

Against: you don't know what you're saving for. Paths and kits are unannounced, and a support whose value depends on team synergy could be excellent or redundant depending on your roster. Committing three versions of savings to an unrevealed kit is a real gamble.

A middle path: save through 4.6 and reassess when 4.7's details land. By then the collaboration will be one version away, and HoYoverse typically publishes character details well before a version opens.

Also announced

A Razer collaboration was revealed in the same broadcast — a Silver Wolf LV.999-themed collection including a gaming chair, keyboard, mouse and headset, with a simultaneous multi-region release. Product details are coming later.

What isn't known

• Ellen and Astra Yao's Paths, elements and kits.
• Whether either is free, despite persistent leaks claiming Ellen will be.
• Banner structure — whether they share a phase or are split across two.
• The collaboration's story content, event format and rewards.
• Version 4.8's exact release date. The 21 December estimate comes from the 42-day patch cycle.
• What Zenless Zone Zero receives in return.

What to do

Start saving now if the collaboration is your target. Three versions is enough time to build a full reserve — but only if you start before 4.6 rather than after it.

Ignore role and Path claims until they're official. The leaks disagree with each other, which is the clearest possible signal that nobody outside the studio knows.

Don't count on a free Ellen. It's the most-repeated unconfirmed claim in circulation.

Watch the 4.7 Special Program for the first real details. Collaboration specifics usually surface one version ahead.

Reassess after 4.6. Pearl and Aha both land before the crossover, and whichever of the three matters most to your roster should get the Jades.
