Trial of the Bastion opens on 7 September and runs to the 17th, and it does something Genshin Impact hasn't done before: it puts a gun in your hands as the primary mechanic.

This isn't a tower defence event where you place turrets and watch. You place the turrets and you shoot, switching weapons mid-wave to handle what's coming down the path.

Here's what's confirmed before it launches.

The short version

  • Runs 7 – 17 September 2026, part of Version 7.0.
  • 3D tower defence — stop enemies reaching their destination.
  • You equip and fire firearms directly, switching between them on the fly.
  • Before each battle, position offensive mechanisms along the enemy path and lay traps to slow incoming waves.
  • 420 Primogems from the combat trial, plus level-up materials.
  • Roughly one evening of content.

Firearms are the new part

Genshin has run base defence events before. Operation Stronghold Defense and the Thwack 'n Smack Defense Bots minigame both asked players to hold a position against waves, and the mechanical shape here is recognisably similar.

What's different is that you're armed.

Past Stronghold Defense events kept you in Genshin's normal combat loop — your characters, their kits, elemental reactions. Trial of the Bastion lets you equip various firearms and shoot incoming enemies directly, and the official framing specifically calls out switching weapons on the fly to counter different enemy types.

That's a meaningful departure. It means the event is testing something Genshin normally doesn't ask for — target prioritisation and aim under time pressure, rather than rotation timing and reaction sequencing.

Practical implication: your roster matters less here than usual. Events built around a supplied mechanic tend to be accessible regardless of account strength, which makes this one of the friendlier Primogem sources in the patch for newer players.

The two-phase structure

The event splits each stage into preparation and execution, which is worth understanding before you start.

Before the battle: position offensive mechanisms along the enemy path to deal extra damage, and lay traps to slow incoming waves.

During the battle: fire on enemies directly, switching weapons as the wave composition changes.

The interesting part is the interaction between the two. Traps that slow enemies aren't just damage mitigation — they hold targets in place, which makes your own shooting more effective. And offensive mechanisms placed along the path chip damage from enemies before they reach you, changing which targets actually need your attention.

So the preparation phase isn't a separate minigame. It's deciding where you want to be doing your shooting.

Slowing an approach means you get more shots on the same enemy. Concentrating mechanisms at a chokepoint means fewer enemies survive to reach the end. Spreading them thin means you cover more ground but kill less. Those are real decisions, and they'll matter more on later stages than the first.

What it pays

420 Primogems from the combat trial, alongside character and weapon level-up materials.

That places it as one of three Primogem-paying events in Version 7.0, alongside the Great Expeditionist Challenge flagship and Mutual Aid in Bloom: Into the Frostlands. The fourth event, Overflowing Abundance, pays in materials only.

The realistic time cost is one evening. These base defence events don't have long grind tails — you clear the stages, you claim the rewards, you're done. That's a good ratio for 420 Primogems.

Where it sits in the 7.0 calendar

Version 7.0 brings Snezhnaya, and its four events open on staggered dates rather than all at once:

  • Great Expeditionist Challenge — from 28 August. The flagship, and the source of the free Diona.
  • Mutual Aid in Bloom: Into the Frostlands — available from the version's launch.
  • Trial of the Bastion7 to 17 September.
  • Overflowing Abundance14 to 21 September. Doubled Talent Book and Weapon Ascension domain drops.

The one with a real planning cost is Overflowing Abundance, because doubled drops are Original Resin-gated. Banking Resin ahead of 14 September is the difference between doubling your farming and watching the event pass.

Trial of the Bastion has no such requirement. It costs time and nothing else, which makes it the easiest of the four to fit in.

What isn't known yet

Everything tactical, because the event hasn't launched.

  • The stage list, and how many there are.
  • Which firearms are available, their behaviour and what they counter.
  • Which mechanisms and traps you can place, and their costs.
  • Enemy types and wave compositions per stage.
  • Whether there are difficulty tiers or bonus objectives.
  • The full reward breakdown beyond the 420 Primogems.

Any strategy guide published before 7 September is describing an event nobody has played. Placement advice, weapon recommendations and wave-by-wave routing don't exist yet. They'll exist within a day of launch, once players have run the stages.

What to do

Diarise 7 September. Ten days is a comfortable window, but staggered event dates are exactly how people miss things.

Clear the Great Expeditionist Challenge first if you haven't. It's the flagship, it holds the free Diona, and it opened on 28 August — meaning it's been running longest and will close first.

Bank Original Resin before 14 September for Overflowing Abundance. That's the one that punishes arriving unprepared.

Don't over-prepare for this one. With firearms supplied and mechanics provided, there's no roster requirement to build toward. Turn up and play.

Expect to finish in a session. Plan an evening, not a fortnight.

Making the rewards count

A stack of Primogems and level-up materials only matters on a roster deep enough to spend them on — and artefact quality, talent levels and roster breadth are the slow half of any Genshin account. Browse verified Genshin Impact accounts if you'd rather play Snezhnaya from a developed roster, speed up artefact and talent farming with Genshin Impact hourly services, or clear Spiral Abyss and endgame content through Genshin Impact boosting while Version 7.0 runs.
