Genshin Great Expeditionist Challenge Guide
By Michael Pras 28 August 2026, 10:00 WIB
The Great Expeditionist Challenge opens 28 August 2026 and runs to 14 September — eighteen days, four minigames, and a free copy of Diona, the 4★ Cryo bow user.
The important thing to understand first: Diona is currency-gated, not skill-gated. Like previous flagship events, you earn event currency across the minigames and exchange it for her once you cross a threshold. You do not need to top a leaderboard or clear anything on hard mode. You need to show up and finish the modes.
Which means the only way to miss her is to not play at all. Eighteen days is generous, and the event outlives Version 7.0's Phase 1 by nearly two weeks.
What the event is
Version 7.0's flagship event, and the centrepiece of Snezhnaya's launch. The Traveler and Paimon visit the Adventurers' Guild Headquarters in Snezhnaya and are invited into a tournament run by veteran adventurers.
Four modes, four different skills:
Precision Express Handling — guide a train along the tracks and reach the destination inside a time limit. Snezhnaya's weather is part of the problem.
Trigger Reflex Trial — aim and shoot targets for points. More hits, higher score. This one leans on 7.0's new shooting mechanics.
Maze of Frost and Foresight — navigate the stage and use the available constructs to get little Jack Frost to the exit. The puzzle entry.
Roly-Poly Domain Raid — combat. Defeat enemies and exploit the Snowball Phase to score.
No single mode gates the character. If one of the four fights you, the others still generate currency.
How to get Diona
- Open the event on 28 August from the Events menu.
- Clear each of the four modes to accumulate event currency.
- Exchange the currency for Diona once you hit the required total.
- Finish before 14 September, when the event closes.
Realistically, one to two evenings covers the four modes. The mix of shooting, puzzle and combat content isn't long — the constraint is remembering to do it, not grinding it.
Everything in the reward pool
Alongside Diona, clearing the tournament stages pays:
- Primogems
- A Crown of Insight
- Character Talent Upgrade Materials
- Hero's Wit
- Mora
The Crown of Insight is the item to actually care about. Crowns are the hard cap on talent levelling — you cannot farm them, and each patch issues only a handful. Skipping this event costs you a Crown you cannot buy back.
On the Primogem total: one community tally puts the event's full clear at around 920 Primogems. That figure hasn't been confirmed officially, so treat it as an estimate rather than a budget line.
Is a free Diona actually worth anything?
Depends entirely on whether you already have her — and most accounts do.
Diona is a standard-pool 4★, available on every banner since launch, which means veteran accounts often hold her at high constellation already. For those players, this copy is a constellation, not a character, and its value scales with where you currently sit.
For newer accounts, she's genuinely useful. Cryo bow, shields and healing in one kit, and reliable off-field Cryo application — which matters more than usual in a Cryo-heavy region, both for Cryo Resonance and for Superconduct setups.
The honest read: don't let "free character" oversell it. Play the event for the Crown, the Primogems and the talent materials. Diona is a bonus that's excellent for some accounts and a constellation ticket for others.
Where it sits in the 7.0 calendar
Phase 2 begins 1 September, four days after the event opens, bringing Flins and Ineffa to the banners. If you're saving Primogems, the event's payout lands before you'd need to commit.
Trial of the Bastion opens 7 September — a 3D tower defence mode where you stop enemies reaching their destination using your gun and placed traps. Roughly one evening's content.
Overflowing Abundance also closes 14 September, and this is the one with a real planning cost: it doubles talent and weapon ascension material drops from domains, but it's Original Resin-gated. Doubled drops only pay out if you have the Resin to spend, so bank it in the run-up rather than discovering the event on the last day.
Mutual Aid in Bloom: Into the Frostlands has already closed — it ended 24 August. If you missed it, its Primogems and the Katheryne statue cosmetic are gone for this run.
What to do
- Open the event on 28 August. Two minutes to unlock, and it removes the risk of forgetting.
- Clear all four modes in one or two sessions. They're short, and currency accrues across all of them.
- Claim Diona once you cross the exchange threshold. Don't leave the exchange step unclicked.
- Bank Original Resin before 14 September for Overflowing Abundance's doubled domain drops.
- Diarise 7 September for Trial of the Bastion.
Nothing here is difficult. All of it is forgettable — and the Crown of Insight is the piece you can't recover later.
Build the account the rewards support
A free 4★ and a Crown of Insight only matter on a roster deep enough to use them — and roster depth, artefact quality and talent levels are the slow half of any Genshin account.
