Genshin Impact Beginner's Guide: Characters, Wishes and Progression
By Sir Ayup
Teyvat looks simple for the first few hours, then a Genshin Impact guide starts to feel essential: elements, Resin, artifacts and banners all arrive at once. The short version: build a team of four characters whose elements react well together, spend your daily Original Resin on the materials those characters need, and save Primogems for the banners you actually want. Everything else in the game grows out of those three habits.
This guide from gamemarket.gg explains how combat and elements work, how Adventure Rank and Resin pace your progress, how Wishes and pity work, how to build characters and what the endgame looks like.
What Kind of Game Genshin Impact Is

Genshin Impact is a free-to-play open-world action RPG from HoYoverse, playable on PC, mobile, PlayStation and Xbox. You explore a large map, follow a long main story and fight in real time with a party of up to four characters, switching between them mid-fight.
New characters and weapons come from Wishes, the game's gacha system. That makes Genshin feel like two games stacked together: an adventure you can play at your own pace, and a collection game where choosing what to pull matters as much as how you play.
Elements and Reactions Decide Every Fight
Every character uses one of seven elements: Pyro, Hydro, Electro, Cryo, Anemo, Geo and Dendro. Hitting an enemy with one element and then another triggers a reaction, such as Vaporize (Pyro and Hydro), Melt (Pyro and Cryo) or Bloom (Dendro and Hydro), and reactions deal far more damage than raw attacks alone.
This is why team building in Genshin starts with elements rather than rarity. A balanced party usually has a main damage dealer, one or two sub-DPS or support characters that apply elements while off-field, and someone who keeps the team alive with healing or a shield. The fundamentals of elemental reactions and team building go deeper into which combinations work and why.
Early on, the story hands you several free characters, and the discounted Beginners' Wish guarantees Noelle, a sturdy Geo shielder. That is enough to clear the opening regions while you learn which playstyle you enjoy.
Adventure Rank, World Level and Resin
Adventure Rank (AR) is your account level. It rises from quests, exploration, commissions and spending Resin, and it gates new story chapters, features and endgame modes. As AR climbs, the World Level goes up too, which makes enemies stronger and rewards better. Knowing how to level Adventure Rank faster at each stage helps when a story quest or feature is locked behind a specific rank.
Original Resin is the energy you spend to claim rewards from domains, bosses and Ley Line Outflows. It refills slowly over time up to a cap of 200, so it is the real pacing system of the game. Most players spend it every day so it never sits full, and point it at the single thing their main team needs most, usually talent materials or artifacts. Treating artifact farming as a Resin efficiency problem keeps that daily budget from going to waste.
Wishes, Primogems and Pity
Primogems are the premium currency. You earn them from quests, exploration, events and the endgame, and you exchange them for Intertwined Fates (limited banners) or Acquaint Fates (the permanent Standard banner).
The limited character banner runs on pity. A 5-star is guaranteed by the 90th Wish at the latest, and the odds rise sharply in the final stretch before that. The first 5-star you get on a limited banner is a 50/50 between the featured character and a standard one; if you lose, the next 5-star is guaranteed to be the featured character. Since Version 5.0, a mechanic called Capturing Radiance also softens long losing streaks. The full breakdown of pity, the 50/50 and how to plan Primogems is worth reading before your first big pull.
The habit that saves new players the most is simple: pick the characters you want and save for them, instead of pulling on every banner that looks good.
Genshin Impact Guide to Building Your First Characters
A character's strength comes from five layers: character level, talent levels, weapon, artifacts and constellations. Levels and talents cost materials from the world and from domains. Weapons come from Wishes, crafting or events. Artifacts are five pieces of gear with a main stat and random substats, and a good set can matter more than a higher rarity.
For most new players, levelling one main team properly beats spreading resources across many characters. A well-built 4-star with the right artifacts often outperforms a neglected 5-star.
What the Endgame Looks Like
Once your account is established, the game opens up a set of recurring challenges. Spiral Abyss tests two teams against waves of enemies on a timer and resets regularly with Primogem rewards. Imaginarium Theater asks you to use a rotating roster of elements, and Stygian Onslaught focuses on tough boss fights. The best starting point is a realistic plan for your first 36 stars in Spiral Abyss, which also shows where your teams are weakest.
Accounts, Rerolls and Platforms
Your progress lives on your HoYoverse account, so you can log in on PC, mobile, PlayStation or Xbox with the same save. Some players restart several times at the beginning to land a strong 5-star early, a practice explained in how Genshin rerolls and starter accounts work. Others skip the early grind entirely through the Genshin Impact market, where accounts, top-ups and services are all in one place.
If you want to start with a stronger roster, you can browse Genshin Impact Accounts, hand dailies and Resin farming to a verified player through Genshin Impact Hourly Services, or clear story and exploration goals faster with Genshin Impact Boosting.
