Diablo Immortal Made to Suffer Update: Duriel Rises, Spawn Joins Sept 29
By Michael Pras
Diablo Immortal's Patch 5.1, Made to Suffer, continues the story Blizzard kicked off with Patch 5.0's Bloodied Jewel update, pushing further into a demon-occupied Lut Gholein while confirming the game's next big collaboration: Spawn, arriving September 29. Here's what the latest dev update covered.
Duriel Joins Andariel in Lut Gholein
Lut Gholein's fall began with Andariel, Maiden of Anguish, seizing Jerhyn's Palace in Patch 5.0. Made to Suffer escalates that conflict by bringing in her twin, Duriel, Lord of Pain, who now terrorizes the city's common districts below. The two demons running separate parts of the same city gives the story an actual power struggle to track, rather than a single villain sitting in one throne room. Caught in the middle are the survivors of the House of the Sightless, a local group players ally with to push back against both sides of the fight.
Drognan Returns, Backed by a Comic Tie-In
The legendary Diablo II mage Drognan comes back to help players navigate Lut Gholein's hell, and Blizzard is supporting his return with a companion comic titled Fool's Hope. Classic locations are coming back alongside him — Atma's Tavern and Jerhyn's Palace both return as recognizable, iconic spots from the city's Diablo II history, giving longtime players landmarks to reorient around as the city's geography keeps shifting patch to patch.
New Sub-Zone: The Highward
Made to Suffer opens The Highward, a new sub-zone within Lut Gholein, complete with its own wanted monsters and bounties. It's the next chunk of the city to become explorable, following the pattern set by Patch 5.0's Common Ward — Blizzard is opening Lut Gholein in stages rather than all at once.
New Event: Twisting Torments
Over in the Rocky Wastes, a new zone event called Twisting Torments puts Andariel's and Duriel's forces in direct competition for territory, with the balance of power shifting based on how the demonic skirmishes actually play out. Monsters caught in the crossfire pick up hazardous new affixes and stat bonuses, and coordinated groups are rewarded with weekly progression materials for taking part — effectively turning the twins' rivalry into a recurring farm rather than a one-time story beat.
Battlegrounds Gets a Visual Rework
Responding directly to community feedback, Blizzard is reverting Battlegrounds' visual style back to the older Corvus aesthetic to improve combat readability. It's a smaller change compared to the story and zone additions, but it's the kind of fix that affects every PvP match rather than just the current content cycle.
Still Riding the 30th Anniversary
Made to Suffer keeps rolling under Diablo's ongoing 30th anniversary celebration, which has already delivered the Warlock class, a fight against Baal, and free legacy Immortal King cosmetics earlier in the year. The dev update frames this patch as another chapter in that yearlong push rather than a standalone release.
Diablo Immortal x Spawn — Confirmed for September 29
The headline reveal is a full collaboration with Spawn, Todd McFarlane's anti-hero creation. Blizzard confirmed the crossover directly on Diablo Immortal's official account, with McFarlane himself appearing in the dev update to talk about merging his version of Hell with Sanctuary's. The collaboration is scheduled to go live on September 29, 2026, and McFarlane described the pairing as fitting well enough to have been "made in hell."
Spawn first appeared in Image Comics' Spawn #1 in 1992, following Al Simmons, a government assassin killed and sent to Hell before returning as a Hellspawn. Blizzard says hundreds of concept pieces and artwork have already come out of the collaboration, though the specific cosmetics, mechanics, or rewards tied to Spawn haven't been detailed yet.
What's Coming at BlizzCon
Full visual and gameplay details for the Spawn collaboration are being held for BlizzCon on September 13, 2026, where Todd McFarlane is set to appear directly on the Diablo Immortal panel. Anyone deciding whether to save resources for the crossover should wait for that panel — nothing about pricing, cosmetics, or mechanics has been shown publicly yet, and the dev update was explicit that this was a teaser ahead of the fuller reveal.
How to Prepare
- Expect two separate dates. BlizzCon on September 13 covers the reveal; the collaboration itself goes live September 29. Don't confuse the two when planning.
- Farm Twisting Torments early. Weekly rewards mean missed weeks are gone for good, not banked for later.
- Don't commit currency to Spawn cosmetics yet. Nothing about cost or acquisition method has been shown.
