VALORANT Abyss Guide 2026: Returned in Patch 13.04 — Best Agents, Map Stats and the Edge Nobody's Using
Abyss returned to the competitive pool in Patch 13.04 at the start of Season 2026 Act 5, replacing Breeze in Competitive and Deathmatch.
It has been gone since 17 March. Five months out of ranked means most of the player pool hasn't touched it since — and Abyss already had the lowest engagement of any map that mattered, sitting at a 6.6% play rate, eighth of twelve across nearly 18,000 tracked competitive matches.
That combination is the opportunity. On a map everyone knows, map knowledge is table stakes. On a map nobody has played in five months, it's an edge — and it's available for the cost of one custom game reviewing callouts.
There's also a deadline attached: this rotation is the Champions 2026 pool, and Champions runs 24 September to 18 October in Shanghai. Abyss is going to be on your screen and on the broadcast for the next two months.
What makes Abyss different
It has no outer boundaries. Abyss is the only VALORANT map where you can fall to your death, and that single design choice reshapes everything else about how it plays.
Set beneath the arctic island of Jan Mayen, Norway, it launched in June 2024 as the game's eleventh map. The void isn't decoration — it's an active threat on rotations, on site entries, and in every duel near an edge.
Displacement abilities become kill abilities. Anything that pushes, pulls or knocks a player becomes lethal near a drop, with no damage calculation involved. That cuts both ways: your own mobility is equally capable of killing you, and Jett dashes and Raze satchels into the void are a well-established way to lose a round before contact.
Play near edges as though every enemy has a one-shot. Because near an edge, several of them effectively do.
The stats that should shape your play
From roughly 17,751 tracked competitive matches across all ranks and regions:
- Attack win rate: 51.4%. Defence: 49.7%.
- Average match length: 21.4 rounds, about 33 minutes
- Top agents: Clove (54.9%), Neon (54.6%), Iso (53.5%)
- Phantom 54.2% versus Vandal 52.2%
- 23 callouts
Abyss is attack-sided, and that's unusual. Most VALORANT maps favour defence. If you're used to banking on a strong defensive half and closing out on attack, Abyss inverts that expectation — a 6–6 first half as defenders is a worse position here than it looks elsewhere.
The Phantom edge is the most actionable number on the list. Players see a map with a void and long sightlines and reach for the Vandal. The data disagrees by two full percentage points. Abyss's engagements are tighter and more vertical than its reputation suggests, and the Phantom's lower recoil and reduced visual noise suit that.
Treat weapon win rates carefully, though. Cheaper guns like the Shorty and Odin post very high numbers here — 63.1% and 61.7% — largely because they're bought in rounds a team is already winning. Read those alongside the buy, not on their own.
Why Clove, Neon and Iso rise here
The three top-performing agents share a trait: self-sufficiency.
Clove works because Abyss kills people in ways teams can't trade. A player who falls into the void isn't getting refragged or revived by conventional means — Clove's post-death utility keeps the round alive when the map, rather than an enemy, removed you.
Neon works because Abyss's walkways and connectors reward speed through exposed space. Crossing an open ledge slowly is the most dangerous thing you can do on this map.
Iso works because Abyss produces isolated duels more than most maps. Narrow approaches mean fewer crossfires and more one-on-ones, which is exactly the situation his shield is designed for.
The pattern to take from this: agents that solve their own problems outperform agents that depend on coordinated setups, because Abyss's geometry keeps teammates further apart than they think.
How to use the next two weeks
Run a custom game and learn the 23 callouts first. Communication failures cost more on a map where nobody on your team has recent reps. Being the player who can call precisely is worth more than usual right now.
Practise the edges deliberately. Walk the drops in a custom. Learn which ledges are recoverable and which aren't, and where your movement abilities put you.
Play it in Unrated before you queue ranked. Abyss stayed available in Unrated, Swiftplay and custom modes throughout its absence from the competitive pool — so the practice was always there, and almost nobody took it.
Watch Champions from 24 September. The tournament pool matches your ranked pool, so pro Abyss VODs are about to become plentiful. That's free structure for a map with little established ranked consensus.
Where Abyss sits in the current pool
The Act 5 rotation is Abyss, Ascent, Haven, Lotus, Split, Summit and Sunset, with Breeze departing after 224 days — its longest continuous run since being removed in June 2024.
Champions 2026's pool overlaps 2025's by five maps out of seven, the differences being Split's return and Summit's arrival in place of Bind and Corrode.
There's a symmetry worth noting: Abyss was the decider EDward Gaming won Champions 2024 on, becoming the first Chinese team to take the title. Champions 2026 is in Shanghai. Riot has not said the timing is deliberate, but it's a neat piece of scheduling.

One caveat on the numbers
The statistics above aggregate all ranks and regions, and much of the sample predates the map's return. Agent win rates in particular shift when a map re-enters ranked, as the player base rediscovers it and pick rates normalise. Treat them as a starting point for the first few weeks rather than a settled meta.
Map knowledge is the cheapest rank you'll ever gain
Abyss rewards preparation more than mechanics right now, because the entire ranked pool is starting from the same five-month gap. That advantage closes fast.
