Season 15.a gave Ao'yin two changes that look small in the patch notes and rewrite his item path completely. His passive Hidden Dragon's secondary sword now deals 35%–70% Physical Attack instead of 30%–60% — and, critically, it can now crit where it previously could not. On top of that, Flaming Palm's casting speed now scales with Attack Speed, with its cooldown nudged from 12s to 12.5s (-0.8s per skill level). Those two lines mean the stats that used to be partly wasted on him now carry his damage. Here's how the reworked kit functions, what to build after the patch, and how to play the Farm Lane's most mechanically layered marksman.

What Season 15.a changed

The official notes list Ao'yin under Mechanics Upgraded, alongside a Proficiency Notification quality upgrade and both a Skills Upgrade and Skill Effects Upgrade.

  • Passive — Hidden Dragon: secondary sword damage raised from 30%–60% Physical Attack to 35%–70%, and it can now critically strike.
  • Skill 1 — Flaming Palm: new effect, casting speed now scales with Attack Speed. Cooldown moved from 12s (-0.8s per level) to 12.5s (-0.8s per level).

Everything else about his kit stays familiar. What changes is which stats convert into damage.

Why the crit change matters more than the numbers

A 5–10 percentage point increase on secondary sword damage is a modest buff on its own. Enabling that damage to crit is a different category of change.

Before the patch, every point of critical strike chance you built only applied to part of his output — the secondary sword simply ignored it. That created a build tension: crit items are the natural marksman path, but a chunk of his damage refused to use them.

That tension is gone. All of his sword damage now scales with your crit investment, which means crit chance and crit damage items convert more efficiently on him than they did a week ago. If your build sheet still leans on flat physical attack because crit felt inefficient on him, that reasoning is now out of date.

Attack Speed now does two jobs

The second change compounds the first.

Ao'yin's kit runs on Dragon Soul marks: using skills grants marks, up to three, and his next Basic Attack consumes all of them, striking once per mark. His damage throughput is therefore a function of how often Basic Attacks land, not just how hard they hit.

Attack Speed already served that loop. Now it also shortens Flaming Palm's cast time, meaning the same stat improves both your mark consumption rate and your skill cast rhythm. Two returns on one stat is exactly the kind of change that reorders a build.

Combined with the crit passive, the direction after 15.a is clear: Attack Speed and crit both gained value relative to raw flat attack.

How his kit actually works

For anyone picking him up fresh:

  • Dragon Souls from his last two skill uses attach to his main and secondary sword fingers. The main sword deals 100% Physical Attack; when other enemies are nearby, the secondary sword strikes a target for the 35%–70% covered above.
  • Marks accumulate from skill use, up to three, and the next Basic Attack expends all of them, striking once per mark.
  • Different skills attach different elemental souls, changing what your enhanced Basic Attacks do — one grants health and mana recovery on hit, with recovery increased further when both sword fingers carry the same soul.
  • His Ultimate transforms him, extending Attack Range, letting his Basic Attacks hit additional nearby enemies, and applying a fear effect that pushes affected targets away from him.

The layering is what makes him demanding: you're managing which soul is attached, how many marks are banked, and when to spend them, while holding marksman positioning.

Build direction after the patch

Community build data for Ao'yin was compiled before 15.a landed, so treat published item orders as a starting point rather than a post-patch answer. The pre-patch consensus centred on Lightfoot Shoes as an opener, with Eternity Blade, Boots of Dexterity, Shadow Ripper and Master Sword appearing across the standard progression, and a faster variant opening Storm Sword into Boots of Dexterity.

What the patch suggests you should shift toward:

  • Weight crit higher than you did before. The passive now benefits, so crit items apply to a larger share of your damage.
  • Value Attack Speed for its double return — mark consumption and Flaming Palm cast speed.
  • Keep one survivability item. He's a Farm Lane marksman with no reliable escape; his Ultimate is repositioning, not immunity.
  • Verify the in-game recommended build. It updates with the patch, and it's the only source currently reflecting 15.a rather than June data.

Combos and how to play him

His established combos are Skill 2 into Skill 1, and Skill 3 into Skill 1 — both built to stack marks before converting them with Basic Attacks.

Three habits separate good Ao'yin players from frustrated ones:

  • Hold maximum distance. He wants to be the furthest player from the fight while still hitting things. His damage is sustained, not burst, so surviving to keep attacking is the whole job.
  • Don't open with your Ultimate. It's best used as self-protection or to reposition when someone reaches you — not as an engage tool. Starting a team fight with it usually means spending your escape before you needed it.
  • Bank marks before the fight, not during it. Walking into an engagement with three marks ready converts far more damage than generating them under pressure.

When not to pick him

He's a scaling Farm Lane marksman with a high execution ceiling and no built-in escape. Against drafts with heavy dive pressure or reliable lockdown, he struggles to reach the late game where his kit pays off.

He also needs the lane to be playable. A marksman who can't farm safely is a marksman who never arrives — which is why our lane roles and fundamentals guide is worth reading alongside any build: the roamer you're paired with determines whether this hero functions at all.

Give the meta a fortnight

One honest caveat. Mechanics changes of this type take one to two weeks for community consensus to settle, because the optimal build shifts and the old data hasn't caught up. Crit and Attack Speed clearly gained value — but exactly how much, and which item order maximises it, is still being worked out in ranked.

Play him, weight your build toward the stats the patch just enabled, and expect the community's recommended order to move over the next few weeks. Our Season 15 tier list covers where the rest of the roster stands while the dust settles.

Climb while his build is still being solved

The window right after a mechanics change is the most winnable stretch of a patch — most players are still running last month's build on a hero that no longer wants it.
