Fortnite x Kingdom Hearts: Sora Confirmed, More Teased

The Kingdom Hearts crossover lands on 17 September. Epic confirmed the date with a teaser image of The Battlewoods POI sign, a blue heart in the sky, the Disney logo and three words: Follow your heart.

And Sora isn't arriving alone. Epic has since teased Roxas, Riku and Kairi — turning what looked like a single guest skin into a full four-character collaboration.

Here's what's confirmed, what's teased, and what's still guesswork.

The date is settled

Epic confirmed 17 September directly, following its earlier "later this week" announcement with a dated teaser.

The v42.20 update lands the same day, and the crossover arrives once downtime ends. Major Fortnite updates typically go live around 4 AM PT / 7 AM ET, though Epic hasn't published a specific time for this one.

One caveat worth holding onto: update downtime and Item Shop availability aren't always simultaneous. The content can go live in the patch while the cosmetics appear in the Shop later in the day. If Sora isn't there the moment servers return, that's normal rather than a delay.

Three more characters, format unclear

This is the development that changes the scale of the crossover.

After the Sora reveal, Epic posted further teasers identifying Roxas, Riku and Kairi.

Four characters from one franchise in a single season is a full collaboration, not a cameo — and it's considerably more than the single guest appearance most people expected.

But how they appear isn't settled. Reporting splits two ways: some coverage treats all four as purchasable outfits sharing bundles, while other coverage suggests Roxas, Riku and Kairi may feature as NPCs on the Chapter 7 Season 4 map rather than as skins.

Those are very different propositions. Three extra outfits is a V-Bucks question. Three NPCs is a map-content question, and costs nothing.

Don't budget for four skins until Epic publishes the item list, which usually arrives shortly before or at launch.

The Kingdom Key is the gameplay half

Epic named the Kingdom Key back in August, when Chapter 7 Season 4 launched, listing it among items and outfits being added later in the season.

It was listed among items. In Fortnite, that phrasing separates something you use from something you wear — and a named item entering Battle Royale changes what you can do rather than how you look.

Reporting points at a Mythic weapon, which would place it in the loot pool as a contested pickup rather than a Shop purchase. Epic hasn't described its function, rarity or spawn behaviour.

The practical consequence: the most impactful part of this crossover may be free. If the Kingdom Key is a Mythic on the map, you don't buy it — you find it and fight for it.

Don't judge the collaboration by the bundle price until you know what the Key does.

Pricing, and what it's based on

Reporting estimates two separate bundles at roughly 2,800 V-Bucks each, with each character accompanied by a matching Pickaxe and Back Bling.

That figure is an estimate, not an announcement. It's consistent with how Fortnite prices premium licensed bundles, but Epic hasn't published costs — and whether there are two bundles at all depends on how many of the four are actually purchasable.

Whether the outfits carry Edit Styles is also unknown, which matters for value since alternate styles are a significant part of what justifies a licensed bundle's price.

Seven months from leak to launch

Worth knowing, because it explains the delay that frustrated people.

The crossover first leaked in February. It was expected in early September, tied to the v42.10 update. It didn't arrive then.

The likely reason is structural. Kingdom Hearts is jointly held by Disney and Square Enix, which means a Fortnite appearance needs sign-off from both — a longer approval chain than a single-publisher property.

The Llama charm is the evidence. Sora's Keyblade normally carries a Mickey Mouse charm; in Fortnite it's a Loot Llama. Changing that detail means the approval went past "you may use the character" and into redesign territory.

And there's precedent for how rare that is. Sora's only previous major crossover appearance was as the final DLC fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2021 — also requiring both licensors, also preceded by years of speculation.

The timing isn't accidental either. Kingdom Hearts IV is in development, with a trailer released earlier this year.

Where it sits in Override

Chapter 7 Season 4 has been built on gaming icons from the start, and Kingdom Hearts was named in that lineup back in August alongside Pac-Man, Joker from Persona 5, Sonic the Hedgehog and Tetris. Crash Bandicoot, Spyro and Mega Man have followed since.

That's the context for your V-Bucks. The season has run crossover after crossover, and more were promised at launch.

One distinction, though: most of them are cosmetic-only. This one has a confirmed gameplay item attached, which is a genuine reason to prioritise it over a skin bundle.

• Whether Roxas, Riku and Kairi are outfits or NPCs.
• The Kingdom Key's function, rarity and spawn behaviour.
• Bundle contents and actual pricing.
• Whether the outfits have Edit Styles.
• The exact Item Shop time on 17 September.
• Cross-game Rocket League vehicle cosmetics, which remain a datamine rather than an announcement.
• How long the cosmetics stay available.

What to do

Be online after downtime on 17 September if you want to see the Kingdom Key in the loot pool early — that's the part that isn't in the Shop.

Wait for the item list before spending. With three characters' formats unclear, the difference between a 2,800 V-Bucks purchase and a 5,600 one is still open.

Don't assume Sora appears in the Shop the moment servers return. Patch content and Shop rotations run on different clocks.

Treat the Rocket League items as unconfirmed. Cross-game cosmetics need their own approvals, and a two-licensor property is exactly the kind that ships in stages.

Budget against the whole season, not this one drop. Override isn't finished.
