Diablo IV Season of Hell's Legacy: Which Splinter to Choose
By Rivan Wi 15 September 2026, 04:00 WIB
Season of Hell's Legacy launches 15 September at 16:30 UTC — Diablo IV's Season 15, and the centrepiece of Diablo's 30th anniversary.
It hands you a decision most seasons don't. You collect three Splinters of Evil and choose one to bear — and each one makes you stronger while making you more vulnerable to the Prime Evil you took it from.
That choice also decides which endgame content gets harder for you. Here's how to pick.
The short version
- Launches 15 September, 16:30 UTC (9:30 a.m. PT).
- Deckard Cain returns, pointing you at three Dark Wanderers.
- Defeat echoes of Diablo, Baal and Mephisto to collect their Splinters.
- Choose one Splinter. It grants an Iconic Power and increases your vulnerability to that Prime Evil.
- Each Splinter is tied to different endgame content.
- Nine permanent Legacy Uniques, shared alt progression, and a Witcher 3 crossover also arrive.
Where the Splinters come from
The seasonal questline is built from locations the franchise has been carrying for three decades.
- Diablo — beneath Tristram Cathedral
- Baal — at Arreat Summit
- Mephisto — within the Durance of Hate
Deckard Cain's lost soul brings word that three Dark Wanderers have returned, each leaving a trail of death behind them. You confront them, enter the nightmares of their past, and defeat the Prime Evils tormenting them.
You collect all three Splinters. You only carry one.
The choice, and what it actually costs
This is the mechanic to understand before you start, because it shapes your whole season.
Each Splinter grants an Iconic Power — and makes you more vulnerable to that Prime Evil. Blizzard's framing is direct: no demonic gift comes without a steep price.
And each Splinter binds to different endgame activities:
- Diablo affects Helltides and Infernal Hordes
- Baal affects The Undercity and Lair Bosses
- Mephisto affects The Pit and Nightmare Dungeons
- All three affect the Tree of Whispers
So the question isn't which power sounds strongest. It's which endgame content you actually run.
Pick against your habits, not your build sheet:
- If you live in Helltides and Infernal Hordes — farming materials, grinding Aberrant Cinders — taking Diablo's Splinter makes your primary loop harder.
- If you push The Pit for Glyph levels, Mephisto's Splinter puts the drawback on the content you'll spend the most hours in.
- If Lair Bosses and the Undercity are your routine, Baal's Splinter is the one that bites.
The inverse is how you should read it. Take the Splinter tied to the content you don't prioritise, and the vulnerability costs you least. Take the one tied to your main loop only if its Iconic Power is genuinely worth the friction.
And the Tree of Whispers is affected regardless, so there's no escaping the cost entirely.
War Plans reputation is tied to your chosen Splinter, which means the decision has a progression track attached — not just a combat modifier.
Waking Nightmares
Three types of encounter recreate memories from the franchise's 30-year history, rebuilt with Diablo IV's visuals.
That's the anniversary's actual content rather than a cosmetic gesture — legendary heroes, notorious foes, and the older, stranger corners of Sanctuary's past, reconstructed rather than referenced.
Blizzard's own teasing is worth taking seriously: memories are described as fickle and holding forgotten secrets, with discoveries hidden for players who look. Anniversary seasons are exactly when studios bury things.
What else arrives
Nine permanent Legacy Uniques — permanent, not seasonal, so they join the game for good.
Shared alt progression, which matters more than it sounds for a game that expects you to roll multiple characters per season.
Soul Splinter jewellery sockets, Challenge Dungeons, Overland Ambushes, Rebirth and the Horadric Post all arrived through the PTR cycle.
Messerschmidt's Reaver returns as a unique two-handed axe — a Diablo II weapon, which fits the anniversary framing exactly.
Seasonal powers include Flames of Metus, Ice of Excidium and Ghosts of Odium.
A 30th Anniversary Battle Pass and a Witcher 3 crossover round it out, with the Dark Wanderbear as a season rank reward.
Free cosmetics worth two hours
Watch any Diablo IV stream for two hours between 15 and 29 September to earn the Deforestation Two-Handed Axe cosmetic through Twitch Drops.
Xbox Game Pass subscribers can claim more than 50 cosmetics by linking their Battle.net account.
Both take minutes to set up. Link your accounts before the 15th rather than discovering the requirement on the 28th.
The roadmap behind it
BlizzCon 2026 placed Season 15 inside a longer plan, and two announcements matter for how you spend time now.
The Amazon class arrives in the first half of 2027. She hails from Skovos, with four archetypes — Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger and Commander — bringing the bow back alongside the javelin as a new weapon type for Diablo IV.
Diablo V is dated Spring 2029, set in a Sanctuary where Diablo has already won and the heroes have been defeated.
A Netflix Diablo animated series is in development with Blizzard, without a release date.
And the Age of Hatred Collection reaches Nintendo Switch 2 on 15 September — the same day — bundling the base game with Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred.
What to do on day one
Decide your Splinter before you start the questline, not after. The vulnerability applies to content you'll be running for months.
Audit your habits first. Whichever activity dominated your last season is the one to avoid taking a Splinter against.
Link Battle.net to Twitch and Game Pass before the 15th.
Don't chase all three Splinters' powers. You collect all three; you carry one. Optimising for a power you can't keep is wasted time.
Expect the first week to be messy. A season built on a choice mechanic takes time for the community to evaluate, and early recommendations will shift once people have run the endgame with each Splinter.
Getting ready for Season 15
A seasonal reset means a fresh character, a fresh paragon grind and a fresh climb through the endgame — and in Diablo IV that climb is measured in weeks, not evenings. Push levels and endgame content through Diablo IV boosting, book Diablo IV hourly services to accelerate farming and War Plans reputation while the season runs, or browse verified Diablo IV accounts with seasonal characters, eternal stash value and battle pass history stated in each listing.
