Arknights Episode 17 Extreme Mode opens on Global on October 21, 2026, at 16:00 (UTC-7), which is October 22, 06:00 (UTC+7), one week after Critical Phase Transition launched. It adds four of the hardest stages in the episode, H17-1 to H17-4, and they are unlocked through Strategic Simulation instead of a simple stage clear. How to Unlock Extreme Mode
Extreme Mode is no longer tied to clearing the final story stage. Since Episode 15, it follows the Strategic Simulation system, and Episode 17 works the same way.
- Unlock Episode 17. Until October 28, 03:59 (UTC-7), you only need to clear Main Theme 3-8 to enter Critical Phase Transition. After that, the requirement returns to clearing 16-19.
- Clear stages in Adverse Environment. Strategic Simulation becomes available on an operation once you clear its Adverse version.
- Complete Simulation conditions. Each condition you clear grants Simulation Points, which raise your Strategic Simulation level.
- Reach the required levels. Each Extreme stage is reported to unlock at a different Strategic Simulation level:
- H17-1: level 2
- H17-2: level 3
- H17-3: level 5
- H17-4: level 7
Strategic Simulation does not cost any Sanity, and it pays out on its own. Its reward track includes Originite Prime at several levels plus Elite Materials such as Polymerized Gel, Refined Solvent, Keton Colloid and Nucleic Crystal Sinter. Episode 17 Extreme Mode Rewards
Based on CN data, each Extreme stage is expected to give these first-clear rewards:
- H17-1: 2 Orirock Concentration and 2 Solidified Fiber Board
- H17-2: 1 Rephasic Enantiomer and 1 Oriron Block
- H17-3: 2 Crystalline Electronic Unit and 2 Transmuted Salt Agglomerate
- H17-4: 1 Polymerization Preparation and 1 Chiral Refractor
In previous episodes, Extreme stages also gave an Originite Prime for a first 3-star clear, and clearing every Extreme stage in an episode unlocked a Path to Glory medal. Expect Episode 17 to follow the same pattern, although the Global rewards will be confirmed when the stages go live.
What Makes Extreme Mode So Hard
Adverse Environment only. Extreme stages cannot be played on standard difficulty, and they always include handicaps that weaken your squad or strengthen the enemy.
Stronger bosses. In earlier episodes, Extreme stages featuring the main boss gave it extra abilities. H17-4 is reported to be a boss stage, so expect it to be the toughest fight of the set.
No Challenge Mode. There is no harder version on top, but there is also no easier way in. You need a team that can clear the stage as it is.
The last two Extreme sets followed the same structure, so anyone who cleared the Episode 16 update stages will recognise the format.
How to Prepare Before October 21
Clear Adverse stages early. Strategic Simulation only opens on operations you have already cleared in Adverse Environment, so finish those first.
Farm Simulation Points now. The higher your Strategic Simulation level on launch day, the more Extreme stages you can try straight away.
Raise your best units. Extreme stages reward strong, fully promoted operators with high skill levels and modules. Spend your Elite Materials on the operators you actually bring to hard content.
Pick up Viy. Episode 17 gives Viy through the List of Items Required missions, with Viy's Tokens from the Joint Terminal. A free six-star is a welcome addition before tackling the hardest stages.
Use the Kernel banner wisely. If your roster has gaps, the Kernel Locating banner from October 20 is a good chance to fill them before Extreme Mode opens.
Watch clears before committing Sanity. Extreme stages are expected to cost 10 Sanity each. Looking at a few clears first can save you from repeated failed attempts.

- Clear Adverse stages to open Strategic Simulation.
