Who Is Phanes in Genshin Impact? The Lore Explained
By GameMarket Team
Genshin Impact's biggest lore mystery just got its first real answer — Nicole's character trailer named the Heavenly Principles for the first time ever, and the name is Phanes. Here's everything that means for the story, and why the entire community is losing its mind over a possible Honkai: Star Rail connection.
🌌 What Just Happened in Nicole's Trailer?
Nicole's character trailer, "The Silenced Golden Strings," dropped on May 13, 2026 — and buried at the very end is one of the most significant lore moments in Genshin Impact's history. Nicole, who has lived for centuries and interacted with the highest powers of Teyvat, speaks directly to the Heavenly Principles. Then she says it. The name that has never been spoken in the game before: Phanes.
That's it. One word. And it broke the entire Genshin community in under 24 hours.
To understand why this is such a massive deal, you need to know who — or what — Phanes actually is.
👁️ Who Is Phanes? The Ruler of All Teyvat
Phanes is the entity known as the Heavenly Principles, the Primordial One, and the First Descender. They are the original creator of modern Teyvat — the being who descended from the stars, defeated the Seven Dragon Sovereigns in a forty-year war, reshaped the entire world, created humanity alongside the Archon of Life, and established the laws that govern every nation, every Vision, and every Gnosis in the game. Every system players interact with in Genshin Impact exists because Phanes built it.
Phanes is not a hidden character or a vague background deity. They have been in the game since the very first scene. The mysterious white-robed figure in the opening cutscene who confronts the Traveler and separates them from their sibling? That's Phanes. Or more precisely, that's one of their Four Shades — divine reflections created to govern different aspects of the world in Phanes' absence.
The Four Shades are the Archon of Time, the Archon of Death, the Archon of Life, and the Archon of Void. They are not independent gods — they are extensions of Phanes itself, each managing a different domain while the original remains absent from Teyvat. The figure in the opening, often called the Unknown God by the community, is the Archon of Void.
🔗 The Phanes × Phainon Theory — Is Genshin Connected to HSR?
Here's where it gets wild. When Nicole speaks to Phanes in the trailer, a voice responds — and it doesn't belong to any known VA in the game. But to a lot of people who play Honkai: Star Rail, it sounds immediately familiar. The community is convinced it's Joshua Waters, the English voice actor for Phainon, the main antagonist of Honkai: Star Rail's current story arc.
This is not just a casting coincidence theory. It connects to existing HoYoverse lore that fans have been piecing together for years. In Honkai: Star Rail, Phainon is heavily implied to be a version of Kevin Kaslana — a central figure from Honkai Impact 3rd. Kevin Kaslana, in HI3 lore, is connected to the concept of a being who reshapes worlds and establishes order across civilizations. Sound familiar?
The theory: Phanes and Phainon are the same entity — or different iterations of the same being — from the wider HoYoverse multiverse. Phanes built Teyvat. Phainon operates in the HSR universe. Both are connected to concepts of primordial order, world creation, and the suppression of Destruction. The name similarity is not coincidental — Phanes is literally the Greek primordial god of creation, and Phainon is the ancient Greek name for the planet Saturn, the god of order and time.
HoYoverse has not confirmed any of this. But they have also not denied it, and the choice to finally name Phanes — in a trailer that released the same week Phainon's story arc is reaching its conclusion in HSR — does not feel like an accident.
📖 What Does Nicole Have to Do With Any of This?
Nicole is the Voiceless Angel — one of the oldest living beings among Genshin's playable cast, older than Zhongli, older than Zibai, dating back to an era before most of Teyvat's current history was written. As a founding member of the Hexenzirkel alongside Alice, she has operated across centuries in ways that most characters never could. She has seen things that current Archons haven't.
The fact that Nicole speaks to Phanes directly — and uses the name — means she has a relationship with the Heavenly Principles that no other playable character has shown. What exactly that relationship is, and what she knows about Phanes' true nature, is exactly the kind of story thread Version 6.6's Archon Quest is going to pull on. Nicole debuts in the first half of Version 6.6 on May 20, 2026, alongside Lohen and Prune, as Teyvat heads deeper into the Snezhnaya arc.
⚡ Why Does This Matter Right Now?
The Snezhnaya arc is where Genshin's overarching story has been heading since launch. The Tsaritsa, the Fatui, the Cryo Archon's plan to challenge Celestia — all of it connects directly to Phanes and the authority structure they built. Nicole, as one of the oldest and most knowledgeable characters in the game, arriving specifically at this story beat is not random. She knows things. The trailer proves she has spoken to Phanes. And Version 6.6's Archon Quest is about to reveal exactly what she knows.
For Travelers who have been following Genshin's lore from the beginning, this is the payoff to years of breadcrumbs. For newer players, it's the perfect entry point into a story that is about to get a lot more interesting.
