Pan Studio has revealed Stifled Howl, a Dual Blades weapon arriving through the Ironcast Project. The official line on acquisition is two words long: free through the Forge, or purchase from the Shop.

In most games that sentence would be the headline. In Duet Night Abyss it's the baseline — and the word "free" is carrying more weight than it looks.

Getting a weapon through the Forge in this game isn't a matter of grinding materials until a bar fills. It's a multi-stage pipeline with a randomised step in the middle, a consumable blueprint, and a duplicate requirement if you ever want the weapon's skills upgraded. Here's what that actually involves.

"Free" is the default here, not a promotion

Duet Night Abyss has no character gacha and no weapon gacha. Pan Studio removed both before launch along with the stamina system, moving monetisation entirely onto cosmetics — a model that pulled roughly $1.6 million in its first full month without paywalling a single character or weapon.

So "free through the Forge" isn't Stifled Howl being singled out for generosity. Every weapon in the game works this way. Coverage presenting it as a special offer has misread the game.

The useful question is what the Forge route costs you in practice.

The pipeline, step by step

Weapons acquired after the opening sequence go through the Secret Letter system, and it has more stages than most players expect.

1. Collect Secret Letter Clues. These come from Daily Commissions, main story and side quests, and achievements, with additional sources in the Nocturnal Echoes weekly bosses, Mystic Maze and Immersive Theatre modes.

2. Convert 10 Clues into one Secret Letter. Letters are weapon-specific, so the ten Clues you spend are committed to Stifled Howl rather than kept as a general pool.

3. Clear a Covert Commission stage to open the Letter.

4. Roll for the blueprint. This is the step that changes the whole calculation. Opening a Secret Letter gives a chance to drop the weapon's blueprint — not a guarantee. If it doesn't drop, you go back to step one and gather ten more Clues.

5. Gather the forging materials. Basic materials and coins come from defeated enemies and quest rewards; weapon components come from Mediation Commissions. The Forge's Blueprints Compendium shows each item's material tree, coin cost and wait time — so there's a crafting timer on top of the gathering.

6. Forge it at the Sanctuary. The Forge itself is unlocked early, during the Chapter One side quest The Wandering Luno, which introduces Lunosmith and hands you the Flamme de Epuration as a tutorial craft.

The randomised step matters more than it sounds

Duet Night Abyss removed the gacha in the sense that matters most: you are never paying for a chance at a character or weapon. That's a genuine and unusual design choice, and it deserves the credit it gets.

But the blueprint drop is still a roll. The randomness moved from your wallet to your time. An unlucky player doesn't spend more money than a lucky one — they spend more hours. Whether that's better depends entirely on which resource you have more of.

If you have limited playtime and bad luck, the Forge route can stall for a long while on a weapon you've already committed dozens of Clues toward.

Blueprints are consumed, and duplicates are the real cost

Two mechanics compound here, and together they're the strongest argument for thinking carefully before starting.

The blueprint disappears when you forge the weapon. Want a second copy? The entire pipeline runs again from the Clues.

Weapon skill upgrades require a duplicate of the weapon. Upgrading through the Smelting system means farming the blueprint again, forging a second copy, and then smelting it.

So the Forge cost of Stifled Howl isn't one pipeline. If you intend to actually upgrade its skills rather than field it at base, it's the pipeline twice over — with a random blueprint roll at the heart of each run.

That's the sentence worth carrying into your decision. "Free" gets you the weapon. It doesn't get you the weapon at its ceiling.

The Shop route, and what it skips

Weapons can be bought directly from the Shop for 3,280 Phoxene Plumules, the game's premium currency, obtained with real money.

That price buys you past steps one through four — the Clues, the conversion, the Covert Commission, and the blueprint roll. It doesn't buy you past the material gathering or the skill-upgrade duplicate requirement.

So the Shop is best understood as removing the randomness, not the grind. Which is a reasonable thing to pay for if the roll is what's frustrating you, and a poor deal if you were expecting a finished weapon.

A third route: Trial Ranks

Some weapons are granted outright at Trial Rank milestones — the Ironforger greatsword, for instance, unlocks free at Trial Rank 15. Trial Rank rewards also distribute upgrade materials, Demon Wedges and coins as you climb.

Whether Stifled Howl appears in any Trial Rank track hasn't been announced. If it does, that's a fourth acquisition option worth checking before spending Clues.

Demon Wedges are the layer above

Duet Night Abyss pairs a melee and a ranged weapon on every character, with free switching mid-combat. Stifled Howl occupies the melee slot, so its value depends on the ranged weapon you already run rather than on its own numbers.

Demon Wedges attach to characters and weapons, granting stat bonuses and in some cases modifying combat mechanics — including altering a weapon's moveset entirely. A weapon without appropriate Wedges is not the weapon shown in promotional footage.

Budget for those alongside the forging materials. They come from Trial Rank rewards and general progression, and they're the difference between owning a weapon and using it.

How to decide

Check your Secret Letter Clue balance first. Ten Clues per attempt, with no guaranteed blueprint, means your current stock tells you how many rolls you can realistically afford.

Decide against your ranged weapon, not in isolation. A melee weapon that doesn't complement your loadout is a slot filled rather than a build improved.

Decide now whether you want skill upgrades. If yes, plan for two full pipelines. If you're content with a base-level weapon, one is enough — but know which you're choosing before you start.

Treat the Shop as buying out the roll, not the grind. It removes the random step and nothing else.

Don't rush. Unlike a limited banner, the Forge route has no closing window. Waiting costs time, not access.
